After reading quite a lot of questionable reviews I've decided to chip in. This review is spoiler-free and only hints at some parts of the story non-relevant for the full experience. Remember to go into this anime with an open mind and accept it for what it is. As many are comparing to this and that, you can completely go ahead and ignore those people.
Story:
The story is as expected walking along, pretty much, standard paths of these types of post-apocalyptic scenarios. Calmness, sudden change, action, calmness, and repeat. We are faced with episodial cliffhangers together with several good tension building plot twists along the
...
storyline. The show tries hard to cater to an audience that mainly enjoy post-apocalyptic scenarios, an audience which I actually do not really belong to, but one I nonetheless got drawn into thanks to this anime. "The red thread" throughout the story are indeed on rails, if you catch my drift, and thus the progress of the story falls very naturally. This series has a very direct and clear approach towards the viewer in what the characters want, what they will do etc. Very few character motives are "hidden" from the viewer, some might not like this aspect of the story. This anime is also exceptionally good at showing the true nature of people when faced with a crisis, almost frighteningly good. Because of the series focus and shortness(only 12 episodes), they have left several "plotholes" open for further explanation which is a minus. This series is, as said, slightly too short for its own good, which left me with a vague feeling of the story "wanting" to show us much, much more of this world than we are shown... In my interpretation, due to the lack of space, we get left with hints.
I for one appreciate what this show tries to do, what it actually achieved in 12 episodes and its aspiration for a possible future. However what it actually achieved fell slighty short on my expectations, thus the story gets the grade of 8/10.
Art:
Outstanding. Steampunk.

Sound:
Made me buy the OST. That good? Yes!
10/10
Characters:
When the main "named" characters react to certain events along the storyline, they keep their individuality intact, this is something that I greatly value - since they keep a red thread to each characters way of thinking. First I thought that the other non - named characters are not shown as much love from the creators. There where parts where I felt: "do these noname characters even care if that many people would die?". ~ But then, I stopped, and questioned why I thought like that... IN a world where death is commonplace and you have seen it with your own eyes several times too many, how would you react? The fire to protect exists but the aftermath to cope with death is a whole other story. This side however is not emphazised as much as I would like to see and people are majorly shown to "steel themselves" or "not care at all".
Backstories, where are the backstories?
6/10.
Enjoyment:
Bingewatched the whole thing, left me wanting for more. Need I say anything else?
9/10.
Overall:
This is a really good anime and I can see why people are hating on it - they simply cannot handle animes with similar settings from the same studio. They say "milk here, milk there", it is like they didn't even watch the series without prejudice constantly bashing it in their heads. Thus you go into this one and take it for what it is, one - almost deralingly - good helluva ride.
9/10
