Cat Soup, or Nekojiru-sou, is a short film/movie about a cat named Nyatto who goes on a journey to save his sister's soul. The movie is a silent film, or at least it doesn't have any talking, and uses beautiful and abstract art to tell its story.
I haven't read any of the comics for Nekojiru, so I'll try to sum up the story in my own words from how I interpretted the film; A young cat, Nyatto, lives with his parents and sister. His sister is very ill, and ends up dying one day when the doctor visits their home. Nyatto follows the one who
...
takes her soul away, and steals part of her soul back so that she can live again, but some of her soul is still missing. Nyatto takes his sister on a quest to retrieve the rest of her soul, going through many dangerous obstacles, until he finds a flower that brings her fully back to life. The siblings go home and live their normal life again, but by bringing his sister back to life, Nyatto damages the world, and his family vanishes, along with everyone else. Eventually, the world disappears.
The end credits for the movie roll, and it shows a video the family all together at the beach, but keeps rewinding the tape. Music box music plays in the end.
The art for this movie is very gorgeous, especially when the siblings are on the frozen wave. This movie is very bizarre, but I love anime that are strange or confusing, so this is honestly right up my alley. When I see people complaining about a show or story because it's complex or hard to understand, I get a tad bit annoyed. Obviously there's nothing wrong with liking stories that are easy to understand, but it's good to try to figure things out for yourself, or to even give something your OWN meaning.
Something that makes me sad when watching this movie is thinking about the author's life. Struggling with depression, she wrote her stories as a way to express herself. May 10, 1998, she commited suicide, leaving a note that included: "Forget I even lived". The movie Cat Soup came out a few years after she died, and seeing Nyatto's world dissappearing after everything he went through almost feels like the world had vanished because the author was gone, her world vanished.
After watching this film, I always find myself drawing Nyatto on papers and in my notebooks. The cats are adorable and so fun to draw!
If you're looking for something good to watch but only have a bit of time, then this is a great film for that.
Thanks for reading! :)

I don't think I can ever emphasize enough how much I love old-school anime. The style, especially character design, animation, storytelling, everything, and although newer and more recent anime can have all of these great qualities too, when old anime has them, it just hits different for me. Of coarse, it's good to realize not all old anime are immediately going to be peak just because it's from the 80s or 90s or older, and I think Vampire Hunter D is a good example of that.
* This review may contain spoilers, but only minor ones *
The movie's first scene is one that I actually
...
like, where Doris, one of the main characters, is shooting monsters at night when she is bitten by a vampire. Doris then asks D to track down the one who bit her, Count Magnus Lee, before she is forced to become the Count's bride. I also really like D, he's a cool character.
The plot of the movie overall is good. The story is interesting and not totally confusing or hard to follow. The story itself isn't really the reason I dislike this movie, it's almost every other element of the movie that makes it not as enjoyable for me.
Something that I really couldn't get behind when watching this movie was the style. The character designs are just alright, but the color palette for this anime is so weird to me. All of the backgrounds in the film are dark colors and dull shades of colors, mostly browns, and are watercolor or painted. But the character's outfits have bright colors that clash so much with the backgrounds that I think it makes the movie unappealing.
It's been quite a while since I watched this movie, but I don't remember the voice acting being amazing, but I won't pit it against the movie once I watched the english dub instead of the original audio with subtitles.
The movie's animation is really only good when it comes to the violence and bloody scenes.
One moment that I do remember from this movie is when someone grabs onto Doris's necklace but ends up pulling part of her shirt down instead, and the only reason I really remember it is because it's such an unnessesary and out-of-pocket scene that caught me off guard. I guess that's another beef I have with the movie. Doris IS a strong character, but she was often used for fanservice instead of cool fight scenes or action scenes, other than the beginning of the movie. The movie is about D saving her, so it makes sense that she wouldn't do much of the fighting, but they still didn't need to rip her shirt off or show her naked for no reason. I guess I just feel this way because I really don't care for fanservice anyway.
The movie ends with D riding his horse away form the town, leaving Doris and her brother once finished his job and saved Doris. I also sorta like the ending of the movie because of how out-of-place the credits music is and because D smiles when Doris and her brother wave goodbye to him.
I am yet to watch Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, but I've heard it's actually pretty good.
This movie was just okay overall, at least for me. There's no doubt that there are much worse anime and movies that have some of the same issues this film has, but I personally would never rewatch this.
Thanks for reading! :)

For a while, I held off writing a review for YOI because I watched when I first started getting into anime in 2022 and the show had come out in 2016, so I was pretty late. But with the recent cancellation of the movie and the olympics going on right now, I thought that there may be some people looking into this anime to either re-watch it, or watch it for the first time.
* this review may contain spoilers *
I want to start of by saying a few things:
First of all, I am a female viewer. Though I am part of the LGBTQ+ community,
...
I am a lesbian, and I despise fujoshis, I'm not a gay man, meaning that my opinions on the homosexual relationship in YOI may seem different from other people that know what it's like to be in a MLM relationship.
Secondly, this review isn't only about the story, it is also about the reasons this show may seem controversial or is controversial. But I will talk about some story and characters as well in the review towards the end, so you can skip around and read what you want!
Now onto the actual review!
I want to start off by talking about the controversy of this show, mainly regarding the topic of queerbaiting. Personally, a romance anime for me doesn't have to have a kiss, or even very many intimate moments where the characters are acting romantic together for me to consider it romantic or a good love story. Outside of anime and manga, I ship lots of characters together, regardless of gender, because I think they're cute together! In YOI, Yuuri and Viktor have many close and intimate, dare I say romantic, moments together, but once it's gay, It's called queerbaiting that the moments aren't 1000% confirmed that they are 1000% romantic. While watching YOI, I thought it was pretty hinted at or the intention was that Yuuri and Viktor genuinely love and care for eachother, but once it was never said out loud, It's a problem for a lot of viewers.
The truth is, people read moments and situations differently. When Yuuri and Viktor hug, I viewed that moment as a kiss a lot like most other viewers. Viktor also kisses Yuuri's hand at one point of the show then makes a comment on something Yuuri said, saying that it "sounds like a marriage proposal". Yuuri even buys engagement rings for him and Viktor to wear as "lucky charms". Viktor says later in the episode that he would marry Yuuri if he won gold, but in the end of the show when Yuuri doesn't win a gold metal, Viktor insists that Yuuri stay with him so they can keep skating together, and someday, probably win gold. I viewed that as, well, a marriage proposal.
Although I think YOI is a good queer anime, I understand that people may be upset about the show's censorship because they would prefer the anime to be more openly queer because good canon queer rep, especially in anime, can be pretty hard to finds sometimes. But the truth is, the show is more focused around the sports aspect than the romance aspect. The show techniqually isn't even BL, or even in the romance genre. It's very common for sports anime queer undertones, whether they be hard to pick up on, or very obvious, and I personally don't mind that.
Queerbaiting is definitly a real thing that companies do to make money, but YOI literally got CANCELLED because MAPPA said it didn't make enough money.
When it comes to BL or queer anime generally, I find that YOI, though it isn't even romance of any kind, portrays queer romance in a way that isn't overly sexualized or fetished. Some moments do seem to have some sexual tension, but not very many.
Many moments between Yuuri and Viktor I found quite wholesome, and whether they be up to the viewer's inturpritation or 1000% canon, at the end of the day, that didn't matter to me.
Now for the story and characters!
Firstly, the music in this show slaps. Each skater's performance had a different song that meant something to them, whether that be a sad expirience they are going though, or to represent an ambition or goal they have. Even the music other than the skater's songs of choice were really nice and fit the moments of the show well.
Now for the characters, and let me just say, this show has so many awesome characters, and is also so diverse! There are characters from so many different countries around the world, and that was another factor that played into their music choices, which I love. Though there aren't many or even very important major female characters once the show is about men's skating, the female characters that do appear aren't just there for fanservice, which is refreshing. In the english dub, the characters have different accents depending on where they're from, and although some are better than others, It's a detail that I though was very nice and made the show more accurate and fun to watch.
Something else that I liked about the show is that the characters felt so REAL. They talk to eachother about their problems, they form different relationships with other characters, and they all have personality and unique traits. Yuuri often lacks confidence and is jealous of other's talent, but gets more confident once he starts skating with Viktok. Viktok may have a hard time coaching Yuuri while also trying to get closer to him and he makes mistakes sometimes, but he is always trying to keep smiling and cares so much about others, especially Yuuri. Viktor even cries when Yuuri suggests that he'll stop skating, meaning Viktor wouldn't be able to be his coach anymore. Yurio (the russian Yuri) always tries as hard as he can and seems angry most of the time, but deep down, he does care about others and is happy for them.
This show's animation is amazing. It's gorgeous and so detailed, especially the ice skating. There is so much passion is each of the skater's performances, and each one is fun to watch.
The overall story/plot is pretty good as well, but I had a hard time being able to tell how much time had passed in between competitions, but maybe that's just me. Each time Viktor and Yuuri traveled somewhere different, they'd meet new people, and they'd spend time together, often site-seeing and going to resturants, sometime just with themselves or with others.
The ending to the anime is something I had to do a lot of thinking about. At first, I didn't like it because I would obviously want the main character, Yuuri, to win. But later I realized that Yurio deserved to win, and that if he hadn't won, Yuuri and Viktor might have not skated together much longer after the show. A lot like some other anime, the ending of YOI grew on me over time, and seeing Yuuri and Viktok skate together at the end of the show was a very sweet and pleasing ending.
Even without the season 2 and movie, Yuri on Ice Is still a great anime.
There are always going to be positive review saying "Ignore all the negative reviews, this show is a masterpiece!!", and negative reviews saying "Ingore all the positive reviews, this show blows!!", but I genuinelly think you just have to watch this anime for youself and see what YOU think, and that goes for all shows. I'm just here to say what I think, and even though I don't think YOI is a masterpiece among all anime or media, I think that at only 12 episodes, It's worth a watch, whether you're looking for comedy, drama, sports, and maybe even romance!
Thanks for reading and enjoy the show!!

I have a very bad habit of giving every anime I like a 10 score, or rating it a masterpiece. So I think it's good to consider thinks like the art, soundtrack, characters, and overall story when it comes to reviews and ratings. But even after taking all of those elements into consideration, I can't help but give this show the highest score avalible.
When it comes to history, I tend to not be that interested in revolutions, or even the time period the show takes place in. But once I started getting into the show, the history of the french revolution seemed way more interesting
...
and exciting to me. Seeing the french revolution through the eyes of a noble was very fascinating considering that in most schools, the french revolution is talked about through the eyes of third estate. It was also interesting to see how Marie Antoinette grew up and became the person she became during the revolution.
One of the best things about this show are it's characters. The main character, Oscar, is so amazing and inspiring! She reminds me of Joan of Arc, my biggest inspiration as a young child and even to this day. Oscar is strong and brave, and also very smart. There are many other well-written, interesting, and smart women in the show. Not only the women, but also the male characters are great as well.
The music in the show is also very good. While watching the show, I never skipped the intro or outro because the songs where so beautiful! The soundtrack adds so much emotion to the scenes, whether they be romantic, action-packed, or sad.
Of any show I've watched, Versailles no Bara probably made me cry the most. The show is so beautiful yet so tragic, but it is about the french revolution after all.
Overall, for anyone who likes history, strong female characters, or just appreciates a gorgeous and emotional story, Versailles no Bara is an amazing watch.
Thanks for reading and enjoy the show!

Shoujo Kakumei Utena, or Revolutionary Girl Utena, is the best drama/shoujo anime that I have ever watched.
*This review may contain some spoilers, but only minor ones*
RGU's story is very interesting and unique, but also feels very familiar in a way at the same time. Everyone knows of stories about a prince on a white horse that vows to save a princess from someone or something evil, but RGU uses this type of story in a very unique and exciting way, in which a girl vows to become a prince to save a princess, who is actually supposedly a witch, from the prince who saved
...
her and inspired her as a young kid, which is actually the villian.
The characters in the story are also very well written and different from each other. In many episodes, characters can be used to represent something with a deeper meaning. Even things as simple as normal-seeming objects can be used to symbolize something or teach a lesson. Things that may seem to have a simple meaning are actually very complex and sometimes contribute to the story as a whole and the story's lesson or idea.
The pacing for the show is perfect, at least in my opinion. Each arc has enough episodes and is unique, often times introducing new characters or shedding light on a character to give them more backstory and screentime.
Just as a heads up for anyone watching, the series is probably darker and more serious than you think. Topics of r@pe and incest are present in the show. However, RGU tackles these subjects as a way to inform the watcher of the negative impact they have on others, and to not romanticize them.
If you enjoy the show, make sure to watch the movie. Both the show and movie, or at least the show, can be found on Youtube for free to watch. The movie is in sub on Youtube but has a dub as well, but the show has both sub and dub options for free on Youtube!
Thanks for reading and enjoy this amazing story!
