"This is the first real series I watched as an anime noob fan, and it could be the one of, if not the most amazing series I have ever had the pleasure of watching."
*The Story*
We begin with the character, Okazaki, who isn't really enjoying his life. He's at a point where you can see from the beginning his life is in a rut, or on a loop. "every day is the same; I wake up, go to school, go home. Nothing interesting ever happens." I will try hard here not to give away spoilers but we can see this guy has nothing good going for
...
him from the start, the art is in black and white, he's talking as if he has nothing worth living for, and then we meet this girl who is talking to herself. This is furukawa; and the moment she comes into frame we see this black and white scenery explode with colour, which is really well represented in this anime. As we go through the story we meet other characters and learn about stories from okazaki's past, which is common in an anime, but it is presented in this anime much better in my opinion, because instead of this guy having a depressing past that we keep seeing, we instead see some of the characters around him and they're stories relating back to him. This then feeds itself to a side story that we don't really learn much about in the first series, an empty dusk land where only a girl and the robot she built from scraps lives, and nobody else is there, we also encounter lights in this world,
*spoiler*
We also learn in the real world that these lights are an old legend that, supposedly, appear when something good happens in the town and grant one wish if you capture them, and if you can gather many of them, something incredible happens.
*The Characters*-contains spoilers-
Unfortunately to begin with we see this situation of the female characters form a harem situation in the story, which is bad because most anime fans can recognize that a harem theme in an anime is not good because it usually leads to an unfulfilled ending. However this is one of the only animes I have seen that actually completely avoids this situation half way through the series to make way for a romance that will make your eyes water. The character development on the other hand is absolutely phenomenal from start to finish. Obviously you must watch the second series to follow the side story of the other world, however the base story is one of its own for character development. In just one series were told each characters lives, loves and losses to an extent. We find out how some are connected and some are so lovable.
*summary*
I can with ease say that this is a pretty easy going anime with some sad and romantic elements, but it is also the beginning of one of the greatest anime creations ever made, the writers and producers easily outdone themselves creating a series with such Devine beauty and grace. The way the depressing scenery becomes a romantic story and the serious elements become filled with humor whilst still being so full of drama. I would recommend this series because it's so tempting to watch each episode after the next, then I would tell them to watch after story because of its ability take the easy going world in the first series and send it flying a thousand times faster with a million times more emotion.
