Gakkou no Kaidan is an anime with two distinct personalities> the original Japanese version, which is a straightforward horror series, and the English dub, which is an entirely different beast. While the story itself isn’t groundbreaking a group of kids facing off against vengeful spirits
it’s the dub that steals the show.
The dub transforms this series into a comedic gem. The plot is predictable at times, but the humor breathes new life into familiar setups. It’s almost as if the characters are aware of how absurd their situation is, making every encounter with a ghost more about laughs than scares.
The art style, though dated, fits the
...
spooky tone of the original and holds up decently for fans of classic anime. The characters are fun but not particularly deep. They’re more archetypes than fully rounded individuals, but the dub’s exaggerated personalities make them memorable.
As for realism well, no one expects realism from a sarcastic talking cat or kids cracking jokes while battling evil spirits. But the sheer ridiculousness is part of the charm.
Even if you’re not into horror, you’ll likely enjoy the humor of the dub. For purists who prefer a serious tone, the original version still delivers on eerie atmosphere and ghostly encounters.
One quick correction to MyAnimeList: the series actually has 20 episodes, not 19. So there’s an extra spooky adventure waiting for you!
Whether you’re here for scares or for laughs, Gakkou no Kaidan has something unique to offer.
