Imagine somebody comes up with an idea to create Evangelion without robots or angels set in school? Not impressed? Ok, now add a deeper psychological and phylosophycal layer? Ok, how about that: make a deeper investigation of sublime emotional relationship between Shinji and Rei? Of course one can't simply put Shinji or Rei in their work, so... here we go. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu is exactly that sort of masterpiece.

Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor the Movie

When I started watching Patlabor the movie, I didn't know it was produced in 1989, so I thought Patlabor plagiarized Evangelion too much. Now that I know it's just the opposite, the value of this work by Mamoru Oshi only gets higher. Patlabor is the predecessor and the main inspiration of Evangelion. It posesses great value for those interested in history, both of Japan, of Anime, of society.

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2
|
LoGH is taking the ideas and concepts of Yamato 2 to a new level. However, LoGH IS heavily based on Yamato 2. The Galactic Empire, titles below the starfships, the Rosenritter regiment - all are present in Yamato 2. So, Yamato 2 is sort of a medium between the completely obsolete Yamato 1 and the classics of space opera.

Those who've started from Crest of the Stars will most likely find Legend of Galactic Heroes quite appealing. These titles have lots in common including global wars, tactics and politics from one side and great attention to individual experiences from the other, what makes them both feel like epic sagas. Crest seems to pay tribute to LoGH in many ways, while being more idealistic and childish in a good sense. It has a fantasy feel with Abhs being space elves. LoGH is like more "down to earth" and historically oriented.

"Amnesia" totally feels like a 90s remake of Galaxy Express 999 with Tetsuro (Wataru) and Maetel (Sophia) travelling across post-apocalyptic USA in quest for understanding what makes a human soul. However, you start to feel the spirit of GE999 closer to the middle of the show. Supervised by Rintaro.
