Lupin III (2015)
|
Lupin and Michiko are expert prison escapists who lead a police inspector on a wild cat & mouse chase. They survive the craziest of situations that have a similar cartoonish feel, like jumping over a cliff onto a moving ship and riding a motorbike over a row of houses. There's also plenty of car chases, gun fights, kidnappings, and romance to go around. Although Lupin III (2015) is set in Italy, and Michiko to Hatchin in a Brazilian-influenced fictional country, they're both rich in culture thanks to their vibrant, detailed environments. If this is your kind of entertainment, then be sure to check them both out! It is not required to watch the previous seasons of Lupin in order to enjoy or understand it.

The child protagonists in these series are about the same age when they embark on a ship to find a long lost treasure. They both form a close relationship with an experienced sailor. If you enjoyed the mentor-protégé connection between Esteban and Mendoza in Taiyou no Ko Esteban, then you will most likely feel the same about Jim and Silver's in Takarajima, and vice versa. Both Mendoza and Silver are charismatic yet cunning leaders and father figures to the young protagonists while pursuing their own agenda. They will do anything it takes to find the gold. Both series are old-school children's anime that have adult characters in prominent roles.

Dennou Coil

Two sisters move to a new town full of mysteries and supernatural events. The little sister, Mei in Totoro, and Kyoko in Dennou Coil, are about the same age and resemble each other in the cutest ways. Both anime have a grandmother figure that the sisters look to for help. Lastly, both anime have strange and cute-looking creatures. For example, the "Mojo" in Dennou Coil look extremely similar to the "dust bunnies" or "soot sprites" in Totoro. Despite that Dennou Coil leans more towards sci-fi, the characters have a very similar feel to them.

Lindbergh
|
The most important aspect of Nausicaa and Lindbergh is humanity's treatment of fantasy creatures: giant insects called "ohmu" and wingless dragons called "lindbergh," respectively. They often get abused and treated as tools of war. When humans mess with them the wrong way, they can become quite monstrous and violent. Both manga have flying ships, aerial combat, ancient legends, and an aristocratic female antagonist. The main protagonists, Nausicaa and Knit, travel with a cute animal companion that protects them along their journey.

Love fairy tales? Princess Tutu and Snow Queen both have a classic good vs. evil plot, a collection of short stories, orchestra music, and a main female lead who desires to save a boy from the clutches of evil. They also share the same magical elements, such as talking animals, fantastical creatures, and magical powers. Snow Queen is very adventurous, while Princess Tutu is more of a ballet school/romance setting, but they have a similar atmosphere. Definitely check one out if you enjoyed the other~

Fantastic Children and Toward the Terra resemble each other much more than one would think. They both contain that adventurous, epic story-line while throwing in a mix of supernatural powers and time travel. Characters from both anime are adamantly searching for something that is important to them, one of which is a way to return to their homeland. These anime are also a bit old-fashioned in design, yet they're brilliant and refreshing at the same time.

Both anime have a story revolved around a man who is stuck wearing an animal mask. Hi no Tori features a 4-episode arc about a man whose head was replaced by a wolf's head. Guin Saga is a longer tale about a man with a leopard's head. These stories also take a serious approach to solving political affairs within an engaging, old-kingdom fantasy setting.
