CHIMIMO = Fantastic | Streams on HiDive | Shin-Ei Animation
The Onigami sisters discovers a strange round creature in their house, where a series of events, leads to these sisters renting out their gardening shed to an envoy from hell (Jigoku-san) and his 12 Chimimoryo spirits. Its brilliant balance between dark comedy / slapstick with its comfy / cute moments, goes hand-in-hand with the theme of the show. Life is filled with both “tiresome / negative moments = hell on earth” and “comfortable / positive moments = blessing of life”, and it’s the contrast / harmony between a range of different experiences / emotions, that make
...
us truly appreciate the good times and bounce back from the bad times. The comedy is such a joy, where the personality of the characters are simple to understand and their chemistry is my favorite of the season, where it’s brilliantly balancing both the use of anticipation + predictability to make the audience speculate on the direction of the episode, while having a generous serving of repetition and enough twists to make the punchline hit hard. It also validates the frustration of petty first-world-problems, where our personal hell-spawns may seem harmless and laughable from the outside (just like the Chimimo’s themselves), but experiencing them first-hand / in-the-moment can be a living hell. Everyone experience hell-spawns in some way or form, but venting / suffering alongside fellow friends / family and looking back on these moments in a comedic + accepting light, help us grow as people and cherish life, with all the valuable and varied experienced it provides.
The cartoony expressiveness of the characters, with their morphing / squashing / stretching, makes it one of the most visually fun shows of the season. The sketchy backgrounds with their comfortable color palette, contrast and complement the character art’s thick outlines and goofiness, giving it a strong visual identity, while fitting the chaotically fun and comfy atmosphere of the show.
Heads-up:
- While I adore the character art, it looks quite simple and cartoony, and different from what most anime fans may want / be used to.
- It makes strong use of repetition (often 3 times), where I know some may find its use of repetition to be repetitive (in a bad way).
- Some people may find it childish, as it’s a family anime for all ages, despite many jokes being more relatable to adults.
Favorite aspects:
- The cast in general and their interactions is my favorite from the season, but I’d like to give a special shoutout to Hazuki. She’s such a slob, but I can’t help love and cheer for her, but also deservedly laugh at her when things go south. College art student that’s constantly on the edge of not having enough credit, laze around all day barely doing any work, constantly drinks beer + eat food and chase the quickest + simplest next short dopamine high, she’s sly + greedy and rarely mind doing stuff others would consider low… However, while she’s a crude person, that’s quick to give up and get annoyed, she’s also a person that’s easy to please, where her joy is quite infectious. Is she a good person…, probably not, but she’s not a bad person either, she’s a normal person with her own issues (more than most…), but can still be a kind sister (ofc, still quarrel a lot, having the most genuine sibling quarrel I’ve seen in years), and spread joy to those around her. Most people probably know someone like this, a person that’s lots of trouble, but you still enjoy keeping in your life, as the joy + energy they bring is more than worth the “trouble”.
- Audiography is just as good as the visuals. Where I especially love how much joy the OST brings me during the comfy moments, and the excellent sound design enhance the comedic moments to new highs, where these often harmonize with each other. Chimimo bouncing along with the music in an adorable manner, OR defying expectations like multiple objects breaking with a soft goofy-cute “bloop” sound effect to the music, just for one to have a harsh/sharp “tzchk” effect that’s often just as strong (or stronger) than the visual gag itself, where this combined audiovisual execution gives the joke that extra oomph needed to transform a chuckle into loud laugher.
Least favorite aspects:
- Episode 1 is good, but easily the worst episode of the show, which can make the show hard to sell, with the 1 episode test.
OVERALL, if you want a goofy-cute + visually distinct family-friendly anime, that brilliantly balances dark comedy + slapstick with more comfy moments, while being extremely relatable to most adult viewers (and most younger viewers), with a wonderful core cast focused on family, then I strongly recommended checking this out as my AOTS.

SPOILER-FREE REVIEW:
Compared to Isekai Quartet, which didn’t fully utilize its cross-series-interactions and meta/reference-heavy comedy, Kaginado got no brakes what-so-ever. It starts by tons of Key Universes getting thrown together and chaos ensues, as it pokes fun at everything the works stand for, where nothing is taboo. Not just using the comedic elements or similarities from the different shows, but also using the most emotional moments/climaxes for laugh, where you burst out laughing from what would previously make you break down crying… and I absolutely it. Kaginado S2 is more of the same, but adding Angel Beats to mix.
The chibi visuals are cute, with many funny
...
faces and visuals gags. However, I’d say the audio production is the most important aspect, of what makes the show that much fun to watch. It got a really strong soundtrack, where I especially love how it uses the more emotional tracks for comedic purposes, either contrasting with a scene or abruptly interrupting the music. The constant use of sound effects also makes the show very active and fun to watch, despite its minimalistic animation.
Heads-up:
- DO NOT WATCH THIS, IF YOU’RE AFRAID OF SPOILERS FROM ANY KEY ANIME! Kaginado thrives from spoiling (and poking fun at) the most important climaxes of every Key anime it references, whether it’s emotional climaxes, the romance, tragic moments, similarities between their franchises, etc.
- It’s not well animated and got Chibi visuals.
Favorite aspects:
- Heroines and the new sides we see from them, interacting with heroines from other universes with similar experiences, both mingling and whining. Very refreshing and fun.
- Favorite VA-cast (and usage of said VA-cast) of the season, with VA from that many different Key anime. Love how it pokes fun at some similarities in VAs, and allow them very different performances from their main show in this bizarre setting.
Least favorite aspect:
- Angel Beats was not a good addition to the cast, and I’m not a fan of most jokes focusing on their cast.
Overall, IF you have seen all(most) Key anime out there (or at least the ones you have an interest in watching), and want to see something poke fun at these melodramatic stories, Kaginado is totally worth checking out.

Nagomu went to Tokyo to chase his dream as a musician, but returns to his family home, Ryokushou (a Japanese sweet shop), when his father is hospitalized. There he finds out they’ve adopted Itsuka, a young girl which is much more serious than the laid-back Nagomu, where he’s asked to act as a father figure to her (don’t worry, it’s a completely wholesome relationship, without any creepy romantic development/undertones). Deaimon follow a semi-episodic structure, where the cast slowly expand, as we introduce and explore different characters each episode, forming a comfy community with Ryokushou/Nagomu as the central location/character.
Decent prodcution, with a soothing color palette and
...
soundtrack, fitting the relaxed atmosphere of the show.
Heads-up:
- The drama is quite slow and mundane, so I can see some people, finding the show to be boring. The comedy isn’t particularly good either, and can clash a bit with the rest of the show.
Favorite aspects:
- Very strong cast of supporting characters, where it feels like we’re a part of the community surrounding Nagomu, each having their own set of troubles to deal with, where the show do a great job humanizing its characters.
- Background art is gorgeous, with a nice painterly filter blending well with the soothing color palette of the show, despite clashing a bit with the character art.
Least favorite aspects:
- Nagomu is ok. He’s not good, not bad, but ok. I’m glad that the show got a strong supporting cast, since otherwise he wouldn’t be enough to keep me engaged.
Overall, I recommend Deaimon if you want a semi-episodic mundane drama, with a strong cast of supporting characters, and a soothing presentation.

Great commercial for Pokemon Legends, following a curious and adventurous boy, set in a time-period where humans are scared of Pokemon and the mysterious/brutal powers they possess. Our protagonist come across a wild Pokemon, changing his life forever; as a person, his path in life and his perception of Pokemon.
Pokemon and Human designs and character animation is very polished, naturally inhabiting the beautiful background of the Hisui region.
Heads-up:
- If you’re not a fan of Pokemon as a franchise or shorts impressive non-human character animation, it’s probably not going to do that much for you.
Favorite aspect:
- I love how brilliantly the short manage to capture the emotions,
...
attitude and power of the Pokemon, whether they’re scared or cute / confident or enraged, its brilliantly portrayed through the body language and expressiveness of the Pokemon, together with a couple of sick sequences of background animation and/or style changes bringing not just the emotions but the raw power of the Pokemon to life.
Least favorite aspect:
- I did feel like there was a lot more stuff that could be explored, and the narrative didn’t feel as creative or tight as some of the Poketoon episodes either, making it hard for the show to leave an impression, outside of its visual splendor.
Overall, if you’re a fan of Pokemon to any degree, especially if you’ve played Pokemon Legends, this is certainly worth checking out.

Shirogane the hard-working council president and Kaguya the prodigy vice president, has developed feelings for each other, but both are too stubborn to confess. The first one to confess loses, and will be looked down upon as lesser by the winner. This gimmick creates a Romcom, that’s presented as a whimsical parody of the “mind games-genre”, slowly exploring the characters and relationships more-and-more, as the seasons progress (each season also being slightly better than the last). Chika the goofball secretary and Ishigami the otaku treasurer are very active from the start, and its colorful cast continue to expand.
Best audiovisual production of any Romcom TV-anime,
...
since anime went from cel to digital. Banger OST, with VA + Sound Design skillfully elevating all aspects of the scenes, whether its anticipation/buildup and punchline of a joke, or landing some of its emotional/epic moments. Animation is consistently competent, with tons of standout moments, whether its epic bombastic scenes or cartoony character animation.
Heads-up:
- Comedy may be a bit too loud / in-your-face for some people.
- Some people will think the romance drags out a bit, but… it’s honestly better paced than most non-parody romance anime out there. I think the progression feels natural, considering the characters and gimmick of the show.
Favorite aspects:
- Chika is such a chaotic goofball, bringing so much energy to any scene she’s a part of, where I love how she’s not just ditzy, but also really impish and surprisingly competent at times (She got into an elite school, so not that surprising).
- Incredible boarding, with extremely entertaining & creative perspectives / transitions / styles, where its competent use of CGI in S3 (despite compositing on sofa in student council room, being quite ugly) allow its camera to get even more dynamic.
Least favorite aspects:
- Iino is quite boring, compared to the rest of the cast. Glad she got a bit sidelined in S3, where I to some degree enjoyed her dramatic moments and jokes about men/romance.
- The dramatic moments are weaker than its more comedic moments. Least favorite episode of the show being Ishigami flashback, but it do land some moments (like relationships explored in the final act of S3), and some of my absolute favorite moments are when comedic focus of an episode help develop and explore different facets of our characters. Best episode in the show, being episode 4 of S4, where I loved the Shirogane and Hayasaka moments, with Kaguya being flustered/confused and Chika being Chika.
Overall, S3 is my favorite season of Kaguya-sama so far, both when it comes to its absurdly-comedic and ultra-romantic elements. If you’re a fan of more comedy-focused Romcom, Kaguya-sama is a must watch.

The Forger Family is… not your normal family, where a Spy Dad x Assassin Mom x Mind-Reader Daughter, conceal their true identities while living under the same roof. Loid(dad) adopts Anya(daughter) and marry Yor(assassin), to infiltrate the prestigious school of Damian(son of important politician), to prevent a war breaking out between 2 neighboring nations. Follow Anya through a Hilarious x Wholesome daily life, climbing the social-ladder at school and bonding with her new family, being both Relatable x Bizarre (and follow Loid, trying to succeed at his mission, while expanding his horizons as he grows more attached to his “new life”).
Animation is consistently above
...
average, with a couple of highlights, both from short bursts of hype action and expressive character animation. Designs are “decent-but-not-great” across the board, outside of the fantastic star of the show, Anya, being goofy-cute-goodness, where the show goes absolutely (pea)nuts with her funny-faces.
Heads-up:
- … Not much heads-up to give here, as it got such a wide appeal. It may get a bit Boring x Repetitive, if you’re not a fan of Anya or goofy-cute things in general.
Favorite aspects:
- Anya!
- Its overall consistency production-wise. Sound design and OST competently enhance both its comedic and cool scenes. Sequences flow naturally into each other, with excellent comedic timing. Color palette is pleasant and my favorite from any TV-anime this season, brilliantly balancing its Cute x Fun x Cool atmosphere. While it’s not the most “flashy” or “artsy” show, it’s the most "pleasant" show to watch.
Least favorite aspects:
- Ugly CGI. Vehicles are ok, but the CGI-crowds look comically bad, sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the polish of its other visual aspects.
Overall, Hilarious x Wholesome anime, with both a unique premise and wide appeal. Anya takes a summer vacation, but there will be more Spy x Family goodness, when Fall 2022 rolls in.

Junpei loves ballet, but due to a past incident, he started practicing Jeet-Kune-Do instead of expressing his true passion, conforming to more traditional masculinity. A fateful encounter ignites his love for Ballet, but having practiced by himself for years, his full dedication is necessary to overcome the mental + physical barriers to become a professional.
Stellar cinematography, immersing us in the headspace of our actors, and showcasing beautiful stage-play / form of ballet (where these motions are accentuated by the long limbs of the of the characters).
Heads-up:
- Drama-focused sports anime, with rough struggles (art of ballet / bonds with others / inner struggles).
- The eyes and long
...
necks, turn some people off, but I really liked them from the start, and know a good chunk of people that grew to love them as well.
Favorite aspects:
- Junpei may not be the most likeable person, but it’s really satisfying to watch him struggle and grow through this important phase of his life, understanding his own flaws and setting strong goals for the future.
- The performances are great, with stellar lighting and animation, and is brilliantly fused with DDD’s character driven narrative.
Least favorite aspect:
- While the supporting cast competently perform their roles in the narrative, I found most characters outside of Junpei and Luou to be quite under-explored/developed. Not a big issue for me, but if you hate Junpei and Luou as characters, it may be hard to get invested in the show. Not a big issue tho.
Overall, an all-around great drama-focused sports anime, succeeding at everything it sets out to do, even having a satisfying conclusion to the season. Fingers crossed for S2.

The legends tell of a god of light “GoL” (happiness and good fortune) and a god of darkness “GoD” (play tricks and steal joy), where “GoL” punished “GoD” by turning “GoD” into a monster, banishing “GoD” to the Outside, cursing his monstrous children with a condition that spreads upon touch. In this fascinating world, the little girl Shiva, meet a the monstrous yet kindhearted Sensei, growing closer as they learn & heal each other’s company, despite Sensei knowing fully well that this isn’t where she belongs.
Most stunning visuals of the season, even taking the production-differences of movie vs TV-anime into consideration, brilliantly presenting its
...
fantastic narrative with a rough storybook-style. High consistency and with certain breathtaking moments of animation / style changes / imagery, truly brings its characters and world to life.
Heads-up:
- While Shiva and Sensei as both individuals and their connecting is brilliantly portrayued, parsing together the more fantastical elements of the story/world, can both feel cryptic and unrewarding, based on the limited material we get in this adaption.
- Some people may feel like “nothing is really happening”, despite said “nothing” being the highlight of the movie.
Favorite aspects:
- Shiva and Sensei’s father-daughter-like relationship is extremely heartwarming.
- Exceptional lighting & colors, especially loving the “darker scenes with light source, like a fireplace or something”. Feels like rejuvenation for your eyes, with how pleasant and warm it feels, brilliantly showcasing the contrast of its worlds/characters with the lighting & coloring as well.
Least favorite aspects:
- I found the mysterious elements of the story/world, purposedly leaving out certain information to be intriguing, but I was sadly left quite unsatisfied by the end, and found the most interactions/content after they left the house to be less enjoyable.
- The ending left me a bit unsatisfied.
Overall, a very pleasant viewing experience, both its audiovisual presentation and the interactions between our 2 main characters, despite leaving me a bit unsatisfied in the end.

**Akebi's Sailor Uniform** is a brilliant exploration of quirky adolescent girls, and a similarly perfect example to "Redline / Liz & the Blue Burd / Tom & Jerry", to its impeccable production being inseparable from the work itself, where its unflinching intimacy and alluring audiovisual presentation, immerse the audience into Akebi's truly ethereal sensory experience.
.
The extremely unique character designs can feel a bit "alien" to some, but I think it's a perfect fit for the cute + beautiful + goofy/quirky/weird characters, watching its slightly awkward adolescent cast mature and go about their daily lives. Both the characters themselves and the clothing got delicate
...
and variable linework, with distinct designs NOT JUST the faces or height/weight, but an immense focus on anatomy (and differences in anatomy), with sensational expressiveness (again not just the faces, their entire body is exceedingly expressive). This is largely thanks to, or at least heightened by its shot composition, with a huge emphasis on both expressing emotions and personality through body language, making the character truly come to life. I also love its use of lighting and art style changes to accentuate certain moments, both its highly detailed stills which it uses quite often (like during the uniform scene in episode 1, and the rain scene in episode 3), and how it created a truly standout moment with the unique style in episode 7’s piano scene.
This isn't the only way to accentuate moments like this though, since while the character animation of the show is quite expressive and impressive through the entire show, there are bursts of energy (likethe awkwardly goofy-cute self-introduction in episode 2, and the breathtaking piano + dance sequence in episode 11), and highlights with beautiful imagery (like the butterfly scene in episode 5, and the running in the rain scene in episode 9). The backgrounds and colors of the show is also breathtaking, making real-life look bland in comparison. However, while I love its unflinchingly intimate presentation, I can see people getting turned away by this aspect, as it's at times portrayed with a slightly voyeuristic gaze, with a focus on non-explicit but slightly teaseful fanservice, focusing on feet, ass, sweat, lips, teeth, nails, armpits, bellies, etc., and I understand if people consider it to have "fly on the wall camera", with just how personal/intimate it can be at times (I consider its intimacy one its stronger points, with how much personality + emotions it gets from these moments, but I understand if people find this aspect off-putting).
.
It's no wonder I consider it the best produced show of the season, when it doesn't just have my favorite visual, but also audio production of the bunch. The scene from 15:55-17:30 of episode 1 is a brilliant example of both how throughout it is when it comes to sound effects both the louder sounds (like opening door sound with a bit of creaking due to old house, and different volume as she moves further away from camera + effects from stepping on wood compared to ground) and smaller sounds (like tying up her hair, or removing sweat with her handkerchief), and how it builds up tension + atmosphere with music, starting with the catchy clapping to start the music, both nervousness + excitement slowly building, but a small stumble after jumping over the river somber her up a bit swapping the slightly nervous undertones of the music with happiness, volume of music incrementally increasing with her excitement of getting closer to school and eyes sparkling with excitement as she sees the sakura trees, entering a cutesy montage of her being like a kid at Christmas-Eve with how energetic she is, another prevalent clap like at the start of the music, signaling the lowering tension as she's panting having been a bit TOO excited, but now in front of gates of her new school).
The show is quite consistent with this in the entire show, both sound effects (like we see from the hilariously awkward nail-clipping scene following the running scene above), and the change in volume & tone of the music, as we don't just see but hear every change in atmosphere/feelings/tension (like when the mini-girl steps up in episode 2 for food, where a much deeper/lower tone interrupt the music, signalizing Akebi's surprise but also excitement as it builds up even more powerful again). The show also brilliantly utilize underscoring during certain moments, not just to create an atmosphere or "not drown out the dialogue", but also create a rhythm/flow in the dialogue (like brilliantly explore in episode 2 when they sit around the table and talk, with many different moods here, where I'm especially a fan of the rhythm from the underscoring during 13:00-13:30). VAs also do a great job, while not on quite the same level as the sound design and OST, they're still very spirited and fitting for the characters, especially Akebi herself, presenting a solid range while staying in character, from her energetic/goofy/excited moments to her emotional/embarrassed/caring moments.
.
Akebi is a bright-eyed and energetic countryside girl, and lacking interaction with others her own age, due to be the only student in her class, she's genuinely interested and actively engaging with everyone around her. She's also quite easily influenced, as we see multiple times through the show, and her entire obsession with Sailor Uniforms originally coming from a really beauty-cute commercial starring her favorite idol (however, being easily influenced and easily taking an interest in new things, is NOT a negative trait here, but an extremely positive one, for both herself and those surrounding her). The show is an authentic portrayal of middle school girls, going through a wide range of emotions, like nervousness, excitement, doubt, passion/interests, challenging yourself + going out of your comfort zone, empowerment & femininity, self-expression and the importance of human connections (main focus being friendship, but also focus on family and other acquaintances). Akebi goes through all of the above during the very first episode (and in more depth during episode 2), but there is still lots of her sides we don't know about, that we learn through her interactions with her classmates during their dedicated episodes (especially true for episode 4, 5, 6 and 8 "where I'd say Akebi plays just as big of a role, if not even bigger, as the side characters", while the 2 final episodes are dedicated to Akebi again, similar to the 2 first episodes).
Every classmate got their own doubts/passion, with dedicated episodes where Akebi's genuine interest in others, both inspire growth and let us explore different facets of their personality, as Akebi cheer them on (which made all of them both going out of them way to show genuine interest for her during episode 11 and then cheering her on during episode 12, extremely cathartic). There is a wide range of topics explored from nostalgic characters embracing the past, to characters lacking self-esteem in their own bodies. While my favorite episodes were the ones focusing on Akebi (episodes 1, 2, 6, 8, 11, 12), the episode where she had the least amount of screentime, managed to be a true standout episode, with a character very different from Akebi and the rest, Hebimori. Many characters lacked confidence or didn't stand out from the crowd, but this character also lacked the passion to chase their interest. Watching her procrastinate due to fear of failure or looking stupid, coming up with excuses for herself, but getting inspired by seeing the hard work of others, just to get scared by seeing the difference between herself and a "professional", but having Akebi's genuine interest AND fascination over her performance, making Hebimori her accept that mastering something is an investment (both time and effort), was an extremely heartwarming + inspiring standalone episode.
I love how there was also a good chunk of characters that "challenged" Akebi and/or put her in a tough spot, some even being more assertive than Akebi herself. Seeing the more shy characters explore Akebi and get inspired by her, was something I loved, but seeing diverse sides of her by supporting characters force out other sides of Akebi, was just as intriguing. While I consider "Washio and Minakimi" to be the 2 most confident characters in the show, the most interesting one with an assertive role, gotta be Usagihara, due to her similarities to Akebi. Both of them are extremely outgoing and assertive characters, both wanting AND being great at forming connections with others, but also being great at hiding their own insecurities, where I loved her slight jealousy towards Akebi's "perfection", until she learned the true Akebi was quite childish and clumsy, and far from the "perfect idol girl" that she imagined. Akebi's family is also fantastic, and I love that the family plays an active role in the show, instead of just "yeah, they exist". Her father's shyness is cute, her mother's support is heartwarming, and Kao is a cinnamon-roll with pure cuteness as the main ingredients; and lastly Akebi herself is a an absolutely adorable ray of sunshine, where I can't help cheering her on, watching her cheering on those around her as well.
.
Overall, if you're interested in a truly beautiful show, with an intimate portrayal of adolescence, Akebi's Sailor Uniform is a "must watch", and my favorite anime since 2017. I consider it a MASTERPIECE, and an anime I possibly see becoming my favorite CGDCT anime ever, if I end up liking it even more as the show sink in.

This show is a timeless masterpiece, that I wish existed in more languages, so it could be enjoyed by people all over the world. That's not even an overstatement, since this is THE most accessible anime I've seen, and something that can be enjoyed by people of ALL ages, whether they're a little girl or a retired old man.
The simple visuals is a perfect fit for the simple life the show is portraying, with some of my favorite facial expressions in all of anime. The show is a masterpiece when it comes to minimalistic presentation, with its classic soundtrack, warm and fun colors, and snarky
...
narrator. The show juggles relaxing, comedic and melancholic moments with ease, while throwing in some real tear-jerkers from time-to-time, which gives you a complete package of the characters lives, as we see Maruko herself, go through all sort of emotions and experiences.
While the cast isn't filled with the "best individual characters", it's still up there as one of my favorite ensemble casts of all time, where each cast member got their assigned role in the episodic narratives, with their own charm and running gags. The show honestly got my favorite comedy period, as you often know what to expect, not just from the characters, but also from the show itself. The show uses this to its advantage, as it builds up anticipation for the jokes punchline, rewarding the viewer for remembering early parts of the episode, as we speculate and look forward to seeing HOW the punchline we've expected will be executed (most of the time, close to perfection, similar to what you'd expect from Bugs Bunny or other classic cartoons).
This mix of godlike comedy, with a relaxing and nostaltic portrayal of everyday life, has semented this as one of my all time favorite shows. It's an anime I would recommend anyone to check, no matter what age or even genres, they're usually into. This may be your gateway anime for the mundane SoL+Comedy genre, and it's great from the very 1st episode, so a single episode is all it takes, to know whether this masterpiece is for you or not.
