How Crybaby misunderstand the source material and butcher Ryô Asuka: the review (spoilers for both the anime and the manga)
(I'm not going to talk about what is good in the adaptation, lot of people have done that already.)
The big problem is in the modifications made to the characters and how some of it drastically changed the message of the original, in a bad way.
First, Miki. Note that changes to Miki’s character don’t have any impact on the story and its message because her only role in the narrative is to die. Anyway, they made Miki “The Hands” a generic cute waifu bait and I’m mad.
...
Original Miki is a wild and strong but normal high school girl who can very much fight on her own. She is a quite the tomboy, but also want to live a romantic adventure. She’s brash, proactive when it comes to love and not afraid of sexual innuendos. In the anime, she poses as a gravure idol, becoming an object of desire rather than a subject expressing that desire. I don’t like that. This is my personal opinion though.
Then, Silene. Why the heck does she wants sex in the anime???? Her lover has been possessed by a human, a creature for she only has disdain. She’s sad and want revenge, not to have sex. Why did they do that? Why the rape? Ugh!
The Problem with Ryô Asuka. Ryô acts crazy not because he is a sociopathic creature who kills kitten for some reasons, but because he has just been traumatised. In the manga, the suicide of his possessed father in front of him deeply affected him, leaving him traumatised. Therefore, he cries often. He has a lot of very heartfelt moments crying with Akira, each other relating to their emotions. And why is that? Because Satan decided that he should be in a human body to understand them and better fight them. And it works! It doesn’t with anime!Ryô because he is unable to resent emotions correctly and that whole plan doesn’t make any sense.
Also, Ryô in the manga realise way before the end his feelings for Akira. In the anime, the message kinda becomes “if he has been honest with himself and realised that sooner all of that could have been avoided”, when in the manga it’s more “everyone is too prideful too actually talk with each other”. Why? It’s because everyone is at fault in the war, the humans, the demons, the devilmen, not just Satan and his demons.
Therefore, the scene with the athletics relay doesn’t make any sense. Ryô could never have taken that relay, for he is unsympathetic and emotionless, and not because he chooses not to, which is the sense that the anime is trying to convey. I really didn’t get that scene. I thought it was really bad.
And finally, Akira. After the death of Miki, is only friend, and his foster family, he abandons his humanity and decide to fight only for the devilmen. This is a huge character development that was completely left out in the anime. I thought it was a bad choice.
There’s a lot of other things I didn’t quite liked, but these are the worsts.
