This story in this anime is pretty stitched together. There are many plot points and characters as well as events shown to the viewer at a rapid fire rate. However, all of these things have little to no payoff because almost none of them are explained or developed. There are some episodes that are completely filler slice-of-life bullshit, which is fun to an extent. Then you take a moment to realize that they could have spent those episodes developing all of the things they introduced in the first episodes. I remember having fun with the show and getting to the finale realizing how much stuff
...
wasn’t properly explained to the viewer. There is a general rule that its better to show, not tell, This show takes that to such extreme lengths that is isn’t even telling the viewer ANYTHING about the what and why. Too much exposition sucks, but some exposition sprinkled here and there is what keeps the viewer engaged. I actually had to rewatch the anime and the finale four times to get a vague idea of what happened. I feel like the anime would have been so much better if they set up everything in the story before just bringing it up in the last episode for no reason.
Many characters have traits that are completely forgotten about for the sake of convenience. Only two characters go through an arc. The main character doesn’t go through a noticeable arc, he’s pretty bland and sometimes even unlikeable because of how flat his character becomes. During the last episode they try and justify his arc through dialogue, but its pretty see-through if you compare the character from the first episode to the character in the last to determine the arc. Sometimes there were character decisions that I found weird. For instance the introduction of characters that are supposed to feel threatening when you have no idea who or what they are or what their motivations are, so it was impossible to take them seriously. Sometimes I would be asking myself; “Why is he/she doing that.” Or: “What is the significance of him/her.” Another thing I thought was weird was a very random character introduction that took place one episode before the finale, and during the finale it is implied that the character and Leo have bonded. Even though that isn’t logical.
Sometimes there would be fight scenes where dozens of neighborhoods of HellSalems Lot were completely destroyed. And everyone thought it was completely okie-dokie. I know its supposed to be that the city is always crazy, but compared to the Armageddon like scenario that created the city (which wasn’t even properly developed by the way) the destruction is almost identical. And if you even think about it, who is rebuilding the neighborhoods? How do these people sustain a living when every fucking day a building falls on them? You cant create this story driven world and expect the viewer not to question the elements of the world. During the finale, (No Spoilers) after the final battle or whatever, their was a wide shot of the city, where ALL OF THE BUILDINGS WERE INTACT. I laughed out loud it was so stupid.
Art and sound design was fantastic. Whenever Leonardo’s used his ‘All Seeing Eyes of God’ a chilling sound effect resembling a bass would reverberate and I thought that was pretty cool. The Jazzy score was groovy and kept you in the ramshackle world the story put together. Op is solid, ed is wonderful.
All In all if you are looking for some crazy Lovecraft-cyberpunk-action story, then this is the anime for you. If you like jazz then this is the anime for you. If you like good art and action and can ignore plot holes, conveniences, bad character development and a lackluster storyline, then go for it! But as for me, I’m not really feeling it.
