Another 1980s series which has a similar romanticized, upbeat, and theatrical feel to this space military drama about young adults trying to make sense of the situation (and themselves) as they face an overwhelmingly unknown enemy.

Shikabane Hime: Aka

Corpse Princess is basically the horror version of Birdy. You've got a butt-kicking, scantily clad headstrong female lead who works with a powerful but mysterious group who are working against malicious forces, who gets involved a somewhat boring normal teenage male protagonist with annoying friends. But hey, the action scenes are awesome.

Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto

Star Driver has a very enthusiastic tone similar to Gurren Lagann, along with colorful mecha battles and fun characters. Star Diver, however, has a splash of fabulous like Gurren Lagann has a splash of badass. Would most definitely recommend to anyone who enjoyed Gurren Lagann, and vice versa.

Heavy on the symbolism and insane visuals, both are aesthetically pleasing and create a dreamlike world, with fresh character and background designs.

Both Black Lagoon and Dogs: Bullets & Carnage (and it's prequel, Dogs) have great action sequences, cutting edge art, and a cast of interesting and colorful characters. Both have characters that make a living out of shady, if not illegal work, and awesome gunslingin' action. In between all this gritty fighting, both series have time for refreshing humor. Although Dogs: Bullets & Carnage has more of a serious, gloomy overtone, I highly recommend it for anyone who likes Black Lagoon, and visa versa. Plus, both series have creepy, eerily cute, homicidal twins. Now who can resist that?

Byousoku 5 Centimeter

Both films revolve around tentative teenage love, and both are very sweet, perfect for the hopeless romantic. However, Whisper of the Heart has a more upbeat and somewhat comedic, lighthearted approach, while 5 Centimeters per Second explores the other side of young love; loneliness, separation, rejection, and growing apart.
