While I do recommend Dragon Ball and think overall it's a good manga, its biggest issue is the beginning parts are so uncomfortable to read with how much sexualization is used early on and nearly all of it involves minors in one way or another. However once you get past that, it's actually pretty good when Roshi isn't there being the "comic relief" pervert. Dragon Ball's main theme is that you should always practice because there is always someone stronger than you, and how it's handled and written is done phenomenally. The contrast between Goku's and Vegeta's reasons for training is the perfect example of ... this. Goku trains because he wants to get stronger, while Vegeta wants to become the strongest. I think this contrast makes the rivalry between Goku and Vegeta easily the best rivalry of all time. Speaking of Goku, while I don't much for him as a character, even I have to admit that he is one of the greatest protagonists of all time with his philosophy with wanting to get stronger. Dragon Ball is one of those manga/anime you HAVE to get into at some point in life because of how influential and iconic it is.

One Piece has some of the best world-building and story-telling in all of manga and anime. Luffy at first glance is a goofy and naïve protagonist, however he may be one of the best protagonists in all of fiction. Almost everything about One Piece is peak, with the only thing preventing it from being a 10/10 is Sanji's character, but even then Sanji has plenty of qualities and good moments that still make him an interesting character even if I personally don't like him. If you are hesitant to get into One Piece because of how long it is, I recommend that you do read ... it as you are missing out on so much amazing story and characters by not reading it and if you read the manga you'll be able to catchup within 1-2 months or even less than that depending on how much you read a day.
