[Spoiler Warning]
Following the comedic and mostly lighthearted tone of the first cour with a few serious moments, the second cour takes off the gloves right away with some important deaths and a very real sense of impending doom. The stakes are suddenly much higher with very limited time for Earth.
Utsuro attempts to perpetrate a grandiose suicide to end his immortal self along with the whole of humanity whereas the Oddjobs,Kieheitai, Katsura,Joi Rebels, Yoshiwara and basically the whole of Edo attempts to protect their 'town'.
As if Utsuro isnt enough, The liberation army ,especially Prince Ensho, have nothing but the flame of hatred and war to
...
keep themselves going forward to destroy Earth, the home of Atlanta.
The series starts off as Gintama like as it can be with a meta comedic flavor before veering off to the main story
Through short backstories, character motivations though not complex yet human-like give a side story and different perspective to each important character like Matako and Ensho, something which Gintama has been doing for quite some time alongside some really impressive foreshadowing.
Much anticipated fights, like Ensho vs Everyone, and rematches finally happen, with loads of bloodshed involved.
The second cour, serves to complement all that Gintama series has to offer via this silver soul arc from the comedy, badass character returns and build up in the first cour to the drama, character interaction, sheer epicness and the 'Gintama' factor that we all come to know and love in the second cour and to serve as an effective conclusion to the series
