Ok so this is my first ever review, and with the sequel, Fuuka, just dropping I figured now would be as good a time as any to write a review for this show. *Full disclaimer* The main reason I'm writing this is because Suzuka was the first romance anime I ever had the pleasure of watching. I had been into shounen like DBZ and Naruto for years prior, but freshman year of college was a dark time for myself and I found this anime out of the blue, started watching and instantly fell in love with the premise of the romance/slice of life genre. short Suzuka got me through an incredibly trying time in my life and was my gateway to the wonderful anime community as a whole and it will forever hold a special place in my heart because of that!
With that out of the way, Suzuka is a lovely romance/slice of life anime that throws sports into the mix to make for a very interesting story in my opinion. The use of sports to explore the relationship between two people is nothing new, and there have been many a movie and TV shows that have done it better I can assume, but despite that the story just sticks with ya and I think the MCs' relationship developing around their sporting activities helps with that. While I've seen many a people complain about the contrived nature with which the romance develops in the show, and I can completely understand that point of view, I think that if one looks a little deeper and really tries to get inside the head of the titular character Suzuka, you'll come to have a much more profound understanding of why the romance develops the way it does. Suzuka is great because the feelings presented by the MC Suzuka are so complex, so real that you can feel the conflict that she feels and the way it is presented is quite masterful imo. If you want an anime that will leave you with a huge case of the feels then look no further, and if you are a relative new comer to romance and slice of life and shojo genres, then I think this a perfect gateway anime to get your feet wet, and if you end up wanting to dig a little deeper into it that option is always there as well.
