This anime suffers from too much self-love. It relishes the visuals over the story and spends entirely too much time on the coming of age of a 17 year old without adding anything new or interesting to the age old trope of the "young hero" who learns that he is special. Don't get me wrong, tropes are there for a reason, they represent archetypes which all humanity shares, but this anime treats it with the same reverence and introspection as a kid who has found his "magic wand" and can't get enough of this new found power that he explores with glee. I'm a sucker ... for good action and fight sequences, but these left me yawning and bored. Too much tech and the fights go from vulnerable, wounded cybertech warriors to Gundam mobile suit battles which I left behind in my playpen. Unless you're a die-hard fan of the game, this anime doesn't break any new ground nor does it satisfy a hard core anime aficionado who is looking for something special instead of mild, puerile entertainment.
