Nichijou
What can I say about Nichijou but that it is near flawless. In my time of watching anime and the comedy genre, Nichijou is something VERY special. With an appealing art style, smooth and sexy animations, well timed gags and characters glowing with personality, this anime is perfect for if you are looking for something fun and over the top. How about we break this apart bit by bit.
Story: 6
Nichijou presents us with a story by giving us no story. Yep, there is no story to this. The story is really just the high-jinks of people and their lives with a
...
whole lot of over exaggeration sprinkled on it. However we do follow two particular groups of friends. The first being there high school girls known as Yuuko Aioi, Mai Minakami, and Mio Naganohara. The second group is a little bit more diverse and consists of an 8-year old professor known as Hakase (Shinonome), her robot adorable Nano Shinonome and a talking cat called Sakamoto. There's not much to say about the story other than it leads to these two groups crossing paths with each other.
Art: 10
The art is very stellar but simple. It could be a bit or miss for people to be honest. The simplicity could captivate you or it could turn you away however, it cannot be denied that simplicity of the art style allowed for some gorgeous animations. Just look at the opening (see here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YfF7HqZm_vA) and see how smooth it is. In fact Nichijou's opening is rather famous for its beautiful zoom in on each character leading to another. With the charming simplicity and amazing animation, the art was a hit for me.
Sound: 8
The sound is great with the music and voice acting being some of the best any comedy has to offer. The openings Kakakata Kataomoi, Hyadain no Joujou Yuujou and Zzz are some of my favorite songs and do a fantastic job just making you feel good. The voice acting done by everyone is so great and it compliments the humor and gags. Its pretty solid.
Characters: 8
The characters is a very strong aspect of this show. They flow with personality and it's fun to watch them. It's not anything ground breaking but it works perfectly. Yuuko is lazy and childish, Mio is carefree and cheerful and Mai is dead pan but she is out to troll and play tricks on her friends. This trio plays off of each other well. On the other side we have Hakase, a smart 8-year old who invents things yet despite her being a professor she acts her age. We have Nano, a robot who longs to be a normal person and Sakamoto who gets caught up in the trouble Nano Hakase get into.
Enjoyment: 10
I'll be honest. Due to the randomness of this show, you'll either love it or hate it. The jokes will more than likely be a miss if you lack knowledge of Japanese culture. Even if you do have a decent understanding, you'll miss a few jokes. The solo and doppio joke is one example one might not understand. In my own view, there was not a single moment where I was bored. I enjoyed the fun and loud nature of the characters, the jokes made me laugh a lot more than other comedies and each episode left me wanting to go on to the next episode. By the end I was satisfied with it all. It wasn't too short and it has a lot of reasons to rewatch. It all depends on preferences.
Overall: 10
I can't help but say this is a near perfect comedy anime. As I stated before, the characters are fun, the gags are well timed and the animation is smooth. If you are looking for a random but jolly good time, look no further than Nichijou. It is a good time.
