Both series are very based on cute girls learning something new in the peaceful countryside of Japan. Each show nails their respective area and the feel of the Japanese countryside very well, and are very relaxing "healing" watches in their own right.

Both shows are very similar anime in more than just a simple few ways. One of the most obvious similarities are that they are both magical girl shows, and both have tragic, almost depressing themes thrown into the mix. Yuki Yuna and Madoka Magica also have characters with similar personalities, and while they are not direct copies of each other, the similarities are there. However while Yuki Yuna is a bit of a tragic take of a magical girl show, it is not nearly as dark or as hopeless as Madoka Magica, which is a show that takes it a lot further. Yuki Yuna is more of a mix of typical magical girls with a tragic twist, while Madoka Magica is a much darker show with complex writing and themes. Due to all these similarities, I think that if you liked one, you may enjoy the other as well.

Both shows are deconstruction anime of a certain genre, meaning they break down the typical conventions of a show and either change them or "play" with them to make them a special snowflake of their respective genres. While Evangelion deals with the Mecha genre, Madoka Magica deals with the Magical Girl genre. Both shows present the viewer with developed, interesting characters that you either love or hate depending on your points of view. Assuming you loved Evangelion or Madoka, you probably have more of a complex, pitiful, or even relatable view on the characters of their respective shows, they both deliver in their parts, and make the shows a joy to experience. Both shows tackle very deep and complex themes, while Evangelion tackles self-worth, love, psyche and human relationships, Madoka Magica tackles balance, equilibrium, regrets, and how not everything will always go the way you think they will go. Both are two very well written shows with characters I love more than most, both shows which I thoroughly enjoyed and related to, and found very entertaining to watch. I highly recommend any of the two.

Both series are essentially about giant mechs fighting to the top. While the goals are different, the base premise is the same, fight against overwhelming odds and win by screaming loudly and launching loud powerful attacks, with you having to turn your brain of and scream alongside with the protagonists as they destroy everything. Gurren Lagann is just as over the top and epically absurd as G Gundam, but pushes it even further with huge explosions, over the top finishes, and robots bigger than anything. If you loved G Gundam, you'll love TTGL, and maybe even vice versa.

Both anime are shows that will question their audiences and make them think about the messages and impactions they present. They both require time, an open mind for interpretation, and patience to understand. They are both quite dark, and should not be watched by children, however, for older audiences, these are both shows I would highly recommend.
