Overlord

To me, Overlord does not feel like an anime where it's a game within a game type of setting. I viewed it more as a fantasy anime. Overlord and Guin Saga both have overpowered heroes who save the day.

Charlotte
add

Charlotte starts off like most Key series. A lighthearted beginning with a forced tragic ending. It even has an innocent naive girl (Yusa) common in all Key series. You will see similar themes in Madoka Magica: innocent girls with seemingly funny stories in the beginning but becomes tragic in the end. However the folks at Key seemed to copy the plot of Madoka into this show. I won't reveal any spoilers but involves having the main character saving those who face potential anguish. Essentially taking in the burdens of others for themselves becoming a Christ-like figure.

Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
add

Two competing factions battle for survival. In both of these series it is humans vs some kind of perceived monstrous being. However, soon you realize both are simply vying for survival, an instinct every creature has. This further blurs the line between good or bad. Although I think Shinsekai yori does an immensely better job at this than Kiseijuu does, there are parallels and in the end you wonder who is the real monster.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

The protagonist has a fellow musician classmate that admires one another. One is a gifted pianist the other violinist. They both explore what it means to create great music together and their bond only strengthens as a result. Both anime have their moments of light humor despite being touching anime.

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

Spoiled brat of a boy has servant help him run things. Except in Soredemo, boy has an older girl to complain to as well. Both clearly appeal to fujoshi and female viewers.

These two films deal with the boundaries between human and machine. In particular, the emotions conveyed between the two and across both borders. In essence the message is emotions know no bounds for these two films.

Shingeki no Kyojin
add

Mankind is in the brink of elimination as mysterious creatures suddenly come from unknown origins to end their existence. The only hope for man is in the hands of a young boy who has the ability to control a power equal to these mysterious creatures. This power is not easily controlled however as the boy at times allows this ability to go berserk as he encounters emotionally driven situations. Epic battles occur as the boy controls this power to combat these enormous titans amongst a ruined city. The question is, am I describing Shingeki no Kyojin or Evangelion? However, as in my case, if you absolutely love one, you most definitely will love the other. While watching, my mouth was usually down in utter shock throughout each episode with both of these works of art.

Saki

Girls & Panzer
add

Both are battle anime featuring groups of girls competing to be the best in the nation. Tanks with Girls und Panzer and Mahjong with Saki. The main protagonist's rival is her own older sister who is more experienced in the craft. A member of the group is obsessed with tanks/mahjong. I'm sure there are other parallels but basically Girls und Panzer is Saki with tanks.

Shinsekai yori
add

Shinsekai Yori and Shiki both deal with the human psyche and its tendencies. These series show how these tendencies could be flawed which in turn may lead to irrational behavior and unfortunate circumstances. The setting is similar, remote/traditional/strict Japanese villages. Both deal with a deviation in normal human genetics. (Zombie/Vampire-like people in Shiki and Esper powers in Shinsekai Yori) Both deal with opposing factions that truly do not have a right or wrong side to them. Both shows are very thought-provoking and would recommend one if you enjoyed the other.

Flying, airships, warring factions, royalty, and dogfights. Last Exile Ginyoku and Toaru Hikuushi share these characteristics. Combined with an engaging and memorable story. You will love both.

AKB0048
add

AKB0048 is basically AKB48's answer to iDOLM@STER. As such, the stories are similar. Young girls looking to make their big break at stardom and their journey towards that goal. That is literally the plot of both of these. AKB0048 though, trying to differentiate itself, adds a more sci-fi element to it compared to the modern setting of iDOLM@STER.

AKB0048
add

If you like space drama both are good. Though Macross is much better, AKB0048 might be up your alley as well. Both feature female singers who entertain in order to make a difference in the lives of their audience. As such, there is a lot of insert songs in both anime.

If you liked
Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2
add
...then you might like
Guilty Crown
add

Guilty Crown is more like R2 than Code Geass 1st season. The main character is thrust into a politically unstable Japan where he himself vows to change the nation his own way by his own methods (which are needless to say at times cruel). He has a power only he can use and uses it to further his own ambitions. (Geass with Lelouch and Void extraction with Shu) He is also leader of an anti-government faction. He also has a quiet female that supports him on the side. (Pizza girl in Geass and Inori in Guilty Crown) I do not want to get into spoilers but there are so many other similarities that you should just watch both if you enjoyed one. Each has its own unique qualities but are just too similar. The only slight difference is that in Code Geass, it is Westerners vs Japanese, in Guilty Crown it is Evil Japanese government vs Japanese high school students.

Tamayura: Hitotose
add

Aria and Tamayura both have a nack of just making you feel better about living. Both series are slower paced but have characters and stories that will make you glued to the screen. All the characters are very much likable. As a result, both series make you feel for the characters, through their ups and downs. These two are one of those series where you wonder why isn't my life like this?! Both excellent series. Tamayura should follow Aria, however, and air again in more seasons.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. (TV)

Basically, if you enjoy tons of perverse/sexual gags, blows to religion, and just nonsensical crude possibly offensive humor that does not hold back, which both PSG and Azazel-san have, you will like both.
