premise - 5/10
nothing special, not bad either, you've seen a variation of it countless times in other shows, but it has it's own flair to it that makes it ok
story - 3/10
starts out ok, could even say i had hope for it somewhere in the first episodes, but then quickly devolves into shojo romance with a bland story that goes nowhere and ends without any closure, just setup for a sequel i hope never comes
artstyle and animation - 2/10
the only reason i won't give it a 1 is because i've seen a few shows with worse than this. the animation is so low budget, it's
...
inconsistent from scene to scene with characters looking completely different from a different angle, and most of the time it's just still images with just the mouth changing between open and closed, and the rare times there's actual things happening on screen it's badly done as well
i'd comment on the artstyle but there is none
sound design - 5/10
boring and bland, not even noticeable one way or the other
character depth - 2/10
one dimensional characters with preset reactions and opinions you can see coming a mile away
character development - 3/10
barely any, i'd say a side character with like 10 minutes of screen time got the most character development, everyone else is just the same as when the show started except for some unimportant changes
voice acting (jap) - 4/10
the main character is average but not bad, but the rest of the cast is quite poor performers, with one character who's (arguably intentional) annoying voice made me wanna drop the show every time they spoke, if it wasn't for the main character's voice actor performance, this score would be a 2/10
~~~~
overall score - 3/10
a low budget, bland show with an uninspired story that goes nowhere, but hey, at least the main character is pretty? i honestly don't know how i managed to finish it, and now that i did, i regret not dropping it earlier
A short spoiler-free review.
Story - nothing special or innovative, but because the show doesn't pretend to be something it's not, it works great. It's predictable, but still keeps you on your toes. Cozy and feels-good.
Art - quality stuff, vibrant colors and nice use of art shift. Not the most diverse settings though, mostly it's just school or home setting rarely seeing more than that, but when we do, it's good quality art. Another point of dislike is how all the characters are color coded, but that's more of a personal thing for me.
Sound - OP/ED aside, sound is good, it's not amazing but the emotions
...
get through, and the quality of the recording is great.
Characters - Realistic characters, without those annoying tropes of misunderstandings and stuff. They're not some super unique ones but that's fine because they're likeable and feel like people.
Enjoyment - Had lots of fun watching this, there was a lot of jokes that really hit the nail on the head and had me laughing like a madman. The romance elements feel well paced and fleshed out. Characters react to situations realistically and you don't feel cheated from the story. I would've enjoyed that the show had a few more episodes to close up the side-character stories but that's about the only big flaw I found with it.
Overall - Watch this if you are looking for a cozy romance show that doesn't beat around the bush, doesn't put in overcomplicated 6-way romance drama hexagon. With 13 episodes, you can watch it in two sittings, and leave with a nice complete story and closure, as well as having laughed and smiled at the whole thing.
It's not some revolutionary new show, but it achieves exactly what it's trying to do and at the end of the day, that's more than enough for an enjoyable watch.
Story - 7
There is an overarching story spanning the whole show, as well as smaller stories usually encompassed in one episode. The reason why I put this at a 7 is because of the fact that the overarching story's pacing is somewhat misaligned. There are several episodes (which are good on their own) where the overarching story is at a standstill so to speak. Otherwise, it's good.
Art - 7
The art is beautiful, the only downfall is the lack of animated frames.
It's not something to disregard, but at the same time, if there's a need to cut budget somewhere, this is a solid
...
place to do it.
Still frames are gorgeous, characters are detailed, and consistently so, but the lack of animation leaves a bit to be desired.
Sound - 8
Excellent OP, didn't care much for the ED.
The OST is great, and very appropriate for the show, one of it's biggest selling points.
The voice acting is good, however, there are times where the recording is poor in the sense that there's a low hum recorded along with the actors' voice which is quite noticeable where the audio recording starts.
Character - 9
Excellent characters, diverse cast, both main and supporting characters are fleshed out and memorable, even with the small amount of time they are on screen.
The show respects the viewer in the sense that they are not told everything and we are allowed to make our own conclusions and theorize motives, emotions, backstories etc.
Enjoyment - 10
Despite the fact that my rating in detail is lower, I quite much enjoyed this show. It tackles with interesting and deep topics.
I highly recommend this show to anyone who is struggling with depression or is in a rough spot in life, it will surely give you a different angle from which to look at things around you.
Overall - 9
Great show, it's hard to give it a 10 because of it's technical downfalls. It could've been a 10 for me if it wasn't for skimping out on animation and audio post-production.
Otherwise, there is no reason why you shouldn't watch this show.
A short, spoiler-free review.
Story - 5
There is a loose story which doesn't really impact the show one way or the other. It's ok.
Art - 7
The art is great, the only thing that sucks it the severe censoring, and not in a sexual sense, it's just very large and intrusive, so it really ruins the flow.
...
Sound - 7
Solid sound work, the OST is interesting and fitting. It doesn't stand out too much in any department though, and the erotic sounds aren't the best.
Characters - 9
Great cast with consistent personalities, some character development and excellent side cast.
Enjoyment - 8
I laughed my ass off, would've enjoyed it a lot more without the censorship though. Also, I would suggest you watch this with a good subtitle, I heard the horrible one is good, if you know what I mean.
Overall - 8
Great show, comedy gold, and a little sexy at times, with great characters and dialogue. It's short too, so you don't need to worry about wasting too much time on it either.
tl;dr
An average show with average plot. No big ups or downs in the story. Ends ambiguous at a point where you'd think there'd be more but you're not really surprised or invested to care that there isn't. It's yuri but not in a realistic sense (not a spoiler)
Story - 5
The story is predictable, using old hooks and curves you've seen in other shows 10 times already. It puts them all together into one big ball of nothing special but nothing especially bad either.
...
In fact, the show was so uninspiring, I felt like I'd already seen it when I haven't. I predicted every single thing that happened and I wasn't even trying. If you're looking for a show that will catch you off guard, this ain't it. On the flip side, if you're looking for something to kill time with, that doesn't require you to think about what you're watching, then it's just what you need.
Art - 5
It's simple, conservative, and knows how to budget which parts should be well done and which ones are unimportant.
One thing that did stand out, the character's eyes and where they were looking and how they were drawn was unique to this show - it actually accurately represented the feelings of the characters, which is a surprise since better shows have failed to do that.
That aside, there's nothing bad that will make you dislike it, but you won't find anything impressive either. It's just that, simple and to the point.
Sound - 5
+1 for the opening and ending, which were the best part about this show
-1 for the misaligned OST
The opening and ending songs were amazing, and without them I'd probably have dropped the show, they really did a good job with the songs and the animation fits well too.
The OST however, was bland, uninspired and often times unfitting to what was actually happening on the screen. Most often some cheerfully timid melody going on in the background while the characters are experiencing inner turmoil. The only reason I can think of this other than poor execution from the composer, is that they were trying to romanticize the flaws of the character, in which case, the fault goes on the whoever's in charge of that, director or writer or whoever.
Characters - 5
Average characters going through average lives with average problems.
If you were to take out the fact that it's a yuri show, and made the whole thing about straight people, I assure you the MAL score would go down by a lot. It honestly seems like the only reason why it's so highly rated on average, and in my opinion it does not deserve it.
As an example, if you were to take a side character from Naruto, say Kiba, and a random character from Bleach like Orihime, made them like each other, toss in a couple common everyday problems for each and you've got a straight version of this show.
It's just two average girls with common problems who interact with each other. Also there's some yuri, although most of the show is just drama, drama and more drama.
Side characters were overall more interesting than the main cast.
Enjoyment - 5
It was ok, I didn't find myself wanting to drop it at any point, nor was I particularly interested in finishing it either. I did love the opening and ending though, so that kept me going to finish it quickly.
Overall - 5
I can't say that you shouldn't watch it, but definitely don't watch it expecting an 8 as it's rating on MAL. Even if you're really into yuri, there's better shows with lower ratings out there.
It's short, it's simple, it won't play with you emotionally or otherwise. It's a true time killer.
Story = 8/10
Engaging, somewhat unpredictable twists and a solid grasp on the situation. The reason this score isn't higher is because of it's not groundbreaking and the fact that some questions regarding the side characters are left open for the viewer to assume what happens to them. Overall, quite good.
Art = 6/10
The art, in my opinion, is this show's weakest point. It's not bad, but it does falter numerous times. I found myself feeling like the production crew had to do budget cuts and they decided it to be in the art department. Even so, I believe they should be commended for choosing the best
...
times to do this, as most of the scenes I was dissatisfied with were not crucial and do not distract the viewer from what the show is trying to portray.
Sound = 7/10
The OST was at times sub-par, but it did go well with the show's tone and they obviously made the effort of having a variety of themes for every occasion. It even surprised me in it's synchronisation with the feeling in the last few episodes. Overall, it could be better, but I was still, quite satisfied with it.
The voice actors did a superb job as well, every breath and stutter was done excellently. The laughter though, a little disappointing.
I should also note that, the first ending was really to my liking, and the second opening was quite bad. This is my own personal opinion though, and as much as I try to be objective about it, I still prefer to let it sit in a different paragraph to make it stand out.
Characters = 8/10
Very good, I'd even go as far to say it's the best I've seen in quite some time. Characters are shown in great detail, and given the exact amount of attention for their importance in the story. Another important note is that they do develop throughout the show, in a way that is unlike most other shows - Their personality. While most other shows present a character and only change their decisions throughout the show, Golden Time shows us how people change, visibly, not only by their actions, but their behaviour and even their body language.
Personal note: I don't know why I can't give it a 10/10 on this part, but it feels like there is something they could have done to make it even better. Regardless, really good characters, and their development throughout the show.
Overall = 9/10
Great, thoroughly enjoyed it. The amount of realism and emotion it shows, coupled with the voice actors' excellent work, makes this show one of the best dramas I've seen so far. It's good traits heavily outweigh the bad and you'll hardly notice them, making you sit back and enjoy the emotional ride from start to finish.
To be honest, it's a 9.5/10 for me, but I just couldn't round it upwards because it felt just a little bit slow for me, 20-22 episodes would have been perfect, and a little more effort in the art department, and this might have been the best show I've seen, but alas, nothing is perfect.
I highly recommend it.
