Mushoku Tensei, unlike most other isekais, which are mostly comedies, tries its best to present a character vindicate himself after given another chance at life.
We have seen characters with redemption arcs like this, staying in genre Re:Zero could be mentioned. But what sets Mushoku apart the most is its pacing. It seems to me, pacing is really under appreciated for most people, probably because of the current highspeed culture of instant gratification, if your are not wowed by the first episode then it must be boring.
I really want to reiterate this point. By the show taking its sweet time, we really get to know two
...
things really well.
One is the world itself, where the isekai genres strength is understated actually. The best way to get used to this new world is through the eyes of the main character, who is a stranger to this world just like us and its even elevated by him being born again there (starting from zero, hehe), instead of teleported there.
Its not perfect in the show, but the writers tried their best to show the world in detail, almost turning the anime into a Slice of Life.
The other is the mc, Rudeus. We get to know that he's hot-headed and full of himself, no, not a ped0, maybe little pervy.
As I mentioned above the anime is almost like an SoL, so the story is almost non-existent. It's like a coming of age story, you only have to focus on the mc, everything else is secondary.
The problem that comes up here (the only problem with show imo) is that while as I said the world and mc is getting built, for some reason the show won't give it's secondary characters a satisfactory amount of screen time. The viewer gets to know them on a surface level, but that's not enough. If we could know them better, their interactions with the mc would be more meaningful.
Now considering the bit of controversy that Mushoku finds itself in. Allegedly Rudeus is a disgusting perv and a ped0. Now you can find a lot of ecchi scenes and weirdo characters in lots of if not most anime. The show like many others like it set in a world akin to the middle ages. Now the middle ages weren't operating on 21st century sentimentalities. Even though people were more pious back then, they weren't afraid of sex (in a non-degenerate way). Women were submissive to a strong man. Stop looking at media through rainbow coloured (mean.:g@y) glasses. I get the ped0 accusation even less. The people who accuse Rudeus to be a ped0, are themselves involved with a medium known for lolis, '300 yo' children who are mentally and physically under 18, literal paed0philia (namely dragon maid).
The show is well animated and colourful. The characters look great, though if they are pushed to the background, you can see the studio took the cheaper route. The ost is great as-well and age-appropriate. The Op is not too bombastic, it eases us into the show really well. The Ed is a bit out of place but great nonetheless.
Don't listen to the negative nancies, It's a great show. If you don't use they/them pronouns, you'll probably like it.
