In a season with many disappointing sequels, Kaijuu 8-gou really stands out. It is not for everyone, but for me it is the anime of the season. All week long, I look forward to the next episode. The pacing is really good, there is not a single dull episode. It is also fun and action packed. The humor is mostly good and is interwoven at regular intervalls. Not too much or too little. And the action is also really well animated with loads of details.
OK, so the story isn't amazing. It has a lot of common tropes. But it mixes the familiar with the unfamiliar,
...
and makes it something unique and intriguing. It is not as brainless or whacky as it might seem like a first, but instead offers some amount of intelligence and depth. It is also packed full of unexpected plot twists, again the pacing is really that good. There are constantly new pieces of story injected and things to wonder about.
And finally the opening and ending songs are amazing! Abyss (OP) by Yungblud is both dark and brooding and at the same time energetic, powerful and epic. Nobody (ED) by OneRepublic is a really catchy, feel good song. You can really tell how the artists were inspired by the story.
