The Eminence in Shadow is incredibly bad and hard to watch. Do yourself a favor and avoid this. If you thought the first season was bad, it doesn't get any better.
I already reviewed the first season so I am not going into details with this review (is this even a review?). After all, I dropped this anime at the middle of episode 8 because I know nothing could prepare me for the amount of second hand embarrassment that I was about to experience in the announced dating arc, had I been a fool to continue watching.
I must give credit to the anime, as the beginning
...
of that episode was extremely but clearly awkward and embarrassing, like a poisonous prey warning its predator to stay away from it. And so, I think I made the smart decision to not sit through it and immediately get away from this anime.
This review is not actually a review, but a PSA to stay away from this. If you are looking into reviews for this second season, it means that you probably already watched the first season and you are debating whether it is worth to continue with this series, and the obvious answer is NO. This is more of the same uninteresting bs. The story, the plot, the everything in this goes nowhere.
I am not aware if there is a cult or something behind this anime so that it gets that high of a rating in order to bait people into watching it, but it is just so bad I cannot believe another human being has unironically found any level of appreciation for this piece of media.

This is absolute dog-ass. A pointless, worthless waste of time, there is no other way to put it.
After all, The Eminence in Shadow has over 8 rating and so does its second season, so even if it turns out to be bad, it can't be that bad, right? RIGHT?! WRONG!!
I must admit that after watching the first 10 episodes, I was confused, flabbergasted. I had to investigate, look up what the actual hell was going on with this anime, as nothing made sense and it felt like a bad parody that was trying to take itself serious.
As it turns out, this anime is an
...
adaptation from a light-novel which is meant to parody the isekai genre, with the clichés and poor storytelling usually found in the mainstream isekais. Now, it is possible that the anime doesn't do justice to the source material and this is just a bad adaptation. However, that is not something that I will look into, as my intention is to review the anime only.
If you have watched One Punch Man, you can imagine this series as basically One Punch Man (as both were made to parody genres of super-powerful MCs). However, this is One Punch Man if it was intentionally made to be insufferably bad.
The overall plot and story is pointless, bad, unimportant. It's meant to be a comedy, but it is offensively bad.
Our MC gets killed and transported to a new world, where he reincarnates with his memories and the power he desired from his past life. This is the main cliché/starting point in some isekais and it has basically become a meme, and up until this point, The Eminence in Shadow has theoretically nailed its purpose to be a parody.
However, the goal of the MC is to be the strongest person without revealing its identity. This does not sound as bad when it's read out loud, but it is executed in a way that is so obnoxious, unfunny and straight up unsatisfying, as the character has self-awareness of his position as MC. Also, the MC apparently has the power to script the events in the story (or absolute, fourth-wall awareness-level plot armor).
Now, pair it with characters that are a joke in itself, and you get some of the most unfunny formula for a show ever conceived. The characters don't make any sense, are irrelevant, incoherent, plain bad.
So, just like in One Punch Man, the unbeatable, unrivaled MC arrives fashionably late to save the day and the side characters, but this is done without charm. All the characters aside from the MC are just bad side characters, which don't even serve the purpose to make a power-scale for the MC to showcase its strength. At best, the side characters' purpose is to provide fan service. Some side characters have a story and background which you may think are meant to be serious and add some kind of depth, but these get thrown into the background and end up not being that important, but are just part of the scenario for the MC.
The art (animation and sound) is good. Not extremely good, but not bad at all. This anime did not deserve the funding it got.
I want to finish this by saying that I just dropped the 2nd season halfway in episode 8. I truly wanted to give this anime a fair try, as I have done with other animes before. However, I found this straight up annoying to watch. It was not just boring, it was bad to the point I felt discomfort watching it.
Some scenes had certain charm, but these are so far between it cannot salvage the consecutive crashes in this roller coaster of garbage.
I wrote this review filled with rage and disappointment that oblige me to shout-out my friends and acquaintances, who recommended this absolute trash, and the MAL community, who rated this anime with over 8.2, gaslighting and betraying unsuspecting passerbyers who only wanted to find something entertaining to watch.
Just... avoid this thing, don't waste your time.

I mean, it's alright... but that's it?
Dandadan just cannot be taken too seriously. It's enjoyable to watch - it's good but not great.
If you have really high expectations because of the hype surrounding it, you will be left disappointed.
If your expectations are low and you expect to hate it, you probably will hate it even more.
Dandadan must be watched for what it really is: a fun, dumb, comical show, which sometimes leans into mature scenarios or stories. These contrasts help to shape the story and its characters, and that "wide range of tone settings" help to establish very early that Dandadan wants to be
...
more than a comedy.
- Story: 7/10
- Totally unserious
The plot is not that original, nor really interesting but comical. This first season feels more like a very long pilot because it ended unceremoniously in the middle of an arc after several characters were introduced. All we have to do is wait for season 2.
- Characters: 9/10
- Likeable but cliché
The characters are cool, funny, likeable, and the relationship between them shaped a very standard romcom setting around the unserious story. With that said, the characters are also very cliché, not so original, but are correctly implemented into the show to make it as appealing as it is.
- Visual: 8/10
- Not bad, not outstanding, personally disappointing.
The visuals are great, but not excellent. I saw the opening which was released before the show and I thought "This looks good, innovative, maybe the production in this anime will dare to bring something new into the animation industry?" - Nope, absolutely not, and this is what disappointed me the most when I picked it up. The animation is flat good, coherent, just on point.
- Audio: 8/10
- Same as visuals
At least the production teams made sure to be consistent with the art across the show. The sound effects and music are standard, there's nothing crazy around going on. The music is used to accompany the action or set the tone on serious/comic scenes, but it does not elevate it.
- Overall enjoyment: 8/10
It is worth to give it a try.

To this very day, I still don't know what possessed me to start and (tragically) finish this thing. It's awful. The characters, animation, the plot, everything is so bad, it can't be salvaged.
My sister (who didn't watch it) told me "Hey, you should watch it. I found it because I listened to the OP and ED and I liked it" and my stupid 16yo me who just watched anime for the sport of it was like "alright, I'll give it a try" and so I wasted hours of my youth.
I'm grateful that it's been so long since I watched it so I can't remember
...
most of the details, my old brain has done a great work supressing the traumatic memories of this event. That said, the feeling of disgust and rage-filled disappointment are still vivid until this day. No one should sit through this damned thing.
Yeah, this review is spoiler free, but I'm afraid that the vague memories I still have of the plot will haunt me until the end of my life. Simply put, the plot doesn't go anywhere, trust me, I watched season 2 too >:(
If you happened to find this review, do yourself a favor: avoid this. This is some nuclear-waste level of garbage.

My personal opinion is simple: I really like it, but the pacing is a hurdle. What fueled me to start the series is that I didn't want to get spoiled.
It has its moments, but you have to GRIND through HOURS of flashbacks. There aren't even that many filler episodes, so you just have to sit through and endure, picking pieces of information, plot and character development throughout the whole series until you arrive at the key moments of each arc, the payout after all the buildup.
This series is only recommended for anyone who feels like enduring the challenge of sitting through it. If you're into
...
reading manga, I highly recommend reading it. The story, characters and the world are well written and the pacing is good, I'd say it only depends on your reading speed.
I'm editing this review in the future once I'm caught up with the damned thing and give it a proper rating score, because it's a piece of art in development so it's not fair to give it a rating this early into the show (800 eps in lol).
One of the reasons why I'm not making a full review now is its animation. It displays the history of the evolution of analogue TV and hand-drawn animation, to the current digital broadcasting and computer-generated animation. And I know that it's evolving even further, with the latest arcs showing off some gorgeous scenes that showcase masterful animation techniques. These are details that I want to put into consideration for my full review.
That being said, I'm never changing my "Mixed feelings" recommendation because; I'll say it again: the pacing is AWFUL. This series isn't something that can simply be recommended to anyone. If you're debating whether picking it up: you've been warned.
