I would not have expected this to be so good. I generally don't like anthropomorphic characters, 2d-3d hybrid animation, or romance. But Beastars beautifully and artfully rendered, with dynamic and fully fleshed out characters and intriguing developments. I often found myself mesmerized by the movements of different animals and how they were translated to animation. In moments of high drama the animation style will change, highlighting intensities of atmosphere and feeling. The strengths of both 2-d and 3-d are used to their utmost to create memorable characters and vivid movement.

I have never found a comedy anime that really hit the spot, but this is just brilliantly written. It is absurd with a touch of realism, with a cast of both normal and outlandish characters. I sometimes get frustrated with shonen tropes, and this show presents us with TWO hilarious over the top shonen protagonists who are not the protagonist- a genki boy who is determined to do his very best at all costs and always ends up showing his butt, and a boy convinced that an evil supernatural organization is after him and he must save the world using his powers. I'm a huge fan of atmospheric horror, so when I found this involved a mysterious presence in a small town, I had to take a look. Shiki is my favorite anime, and there were some comparable moments, especially including familiar and safe neighbors who suddenly become uncanny. There was a lot I really disliked, but there are some genuinely good moments for fans of atmospheric horror and Japanese folk culture. Don't expect any real scares, but there is some psychological unease and shadowy folkloric figures with interesting connotations.
