Planetes – A Hidden Sci-Fi Gem That Took Me by Surprise
I went into Planetes with low expectations, picking it up solely because I love sci-fi and the old-school animation style. But man, I was not ready for this. Planetes had everything I needed—romance, drama, action, a bit of slice-of-life, and a mix of both lighthearted and heavy themes. At times, it felt like I was actually living in space alongside the characters.
One thing I really appreciated was the contrast between the beginning and the end. At first, it felt like I was watching Friends in space, with a slow and relaxed pace. But oh boy,
...
when it picked up, it really picked up. It reminded me of Made in Abyss—the early episodes feel chill and cozy, and then suddenly, you're hit with deep, intense themes like racism, oppression, terrorism, and more. It has everything, all wrapped up in Hachimaki's coming-of-age journey and his relationship with Ai.
And then there’s that moment—when Hachimaki has to decide whether to stay with the woman he loves, or move forward into the vast unknown of space. That hit hard. I laughed, I cried, I went through a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s been a long time since an anime made me feel this way—since I truly enjoyed an anime like this.
It brought back that feeling I had when I first started watching anime—the thrill of discovering something new, the excitement of unexpected twists. Of course, it’s not flawless. If I looked at it objectively, maybe it’s more of an 8/10 or even a 7/10. But for me? I was down bad for this show. Personally, it’s a solid 10/10.

I’ve been looking forward to this movie ever since I finished watching the final season, two years ago. While I can’t say it fully met my long-standing expectations, it didn’t leave me utterly disappointed either. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be: rushed.
In the last season, the final match spanned over 10 episodes, giving viewers time to connect deeply with the game’s flow and the mini-stories unfolding on the court. By the final point, I had chills, and, admittedly, I shed a tear or two. This movie, however, failed to evoke the same emotions in me, despite
...
having even greater potential. Nekoma and Karasuno share a rich history, so why limit their story to just 80 minutes?
In my opinion, a shorter 6-episode season would have been much more effective. It could have brought out the same, if not stronger, feelings as the last season. However, to give credit where it’s due, the animation in the movie was brilliantly executed. The visuals were undeniably stunning.
Still, I found myself yearning for more. I wanted moments I could revisit or search for in AMVs—something truly memorable. Unfortunately, with just 80 minutes, I don’t think that’s possible. It’s a shame, really.
Overall, while the movie had its strengths, it left me wishing for a longer and more immersive experience. Fans of the series deserved more time to fully appreciate this iconic match.

So where would I start with what led me to see this piece. I have encountered the Shogi theme in many works, but I have never seen anything whose center would actually be Shogi. The main character finds refuge from the outside world in this strategy game. In the beginning, Rei is a closed boy who lost his parents at a young age and was adopted after their death by a friend of his father, who raised him and led him on the path of a professional shogi player. After a while, Rei moves to his own apartment where he lives alone. One day, three
...
sisters come into his black and white life and turn his life 180 degrees. This anime exceeded my expectations.
On the surface, it seems that it is purely about shogi, but on the other hand, we dive deep into the lives of our main characters and deal with topics such as bullying, finding oneself, losing a loved one, failure or competition.
As for the music, I don't think there's anything to add, it fits very nicely and in some scenes it even brings tears to my eyes.
The animation is beautiful, a nice combination with the gloomy colors of Rei's life, which slowly change to colorful, lively and full of joy. I fell in love with the characters at the moment, especially the initial diversity between the Rei and the girls.
A very solid 9.3/10 in my opinion
