Have you ever wanted to see a high budget Raiders of the Lost Ark anime? This is the only non-spoilery thing I'm going to write before diving further into my review so if you don't care then lets move on:
Oh and this review is me basically coming back from my 2 year slumber. And this is my first ever review on MAL which I had to make after seeing the appalling score this movie had. Like, really? 6.67? How is that fair? You want to tell me this movie is in the same range of score as Sekkou Boys?
Anyway, yes, the animation is beautiful
...
as expected of a 90's era anime movie, no doubt about that. Honestly you can just watch it for the 90's gritty and no-nonsense era style animation and realism (imagine Akira, Jin-Roh ,Patlabor 2, you get the idea).
Other than that the sound design is great. I remember one of the villains jumping on an icy rock and hearing his precise 'one-two' footsteps. This attention to details is noticeable and adds a lot to a movie. There's also a well directed sense of when to put music or sound or not. Plus some pretty memorable osts especially in that Turkey scene. Oh yea there's a Turkey scene, can you imagine?
Indiana Jones for me isn't an interesting character. He doesn't go through any character development or some serious character study about the 'consequences of raiding ancient artifacts' but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark. Same here - the main MC isn't that interesting. He's the same OP 'anime protagonist with a traumatic past' you've seen a hundred times before but it's serviceable enough to tell the story.
The story itself is an interesting take on Noah's Ark. Basically the anime imagines the Ark to be this alien destructive machine that controls the atmosphere and is basically God's powers - able to create and destroy life when it sees fit and surprise surprise the main "genius" villain wants to use that power to "restart" humanity because of how bad it is only to be stopped by the MC in the last second. Before getting into the Ark however the MC was suppose to be stopped by the villain's group which failed because the MC is so badass. The action scenes themselves are pretty cool though.
All of this was enough for me to give this movie an 8 because I wasn't bored by an over-indulgent story, I wasn't disgusted by lazy visuals and I didn't hate the characters, I personally consider this a good time and I hope others will as well this is why its important to me to post this review to bring some deserved justice for this underrated anime film. You want some good action and some interesting concepts? Go watch this movie!
