There will be a few spoilers in this review.
Re:Zero is a unique anime with a lot of unexpected turns. This anime is a new twist on the "parallel universe" theme and it is somewhat refreshing.
Story: 7/10
The story of Re:Zero follows our main protagonist Subaru when he gets transported to a parallel universe. At first, he believes that it will be like any other parallel universe anime a harem with an overpowered main

character. Without knowing Subaru gets mugged in an alleyway by 3 unknown thugs, and he quickly learns that he does not have any special abilities or powers. At that moment he gets saved by the heroine of the story, Emilia. I get the feeling that the writer is taunting the other "to another world" animes by parodying them and making fun of them, but suddenly at the end of episode 1, Subaru and Emilia dies a gruesome death.
This is a small turning point early in the anime. We learn that every time Subaru dies, he gets dragged back in time to the last "checkpoint" and starts all over to change the future, without anyone but himself knowing. Subaru calls this ability of his "return from death." The downside to this ability is that he has to die to activate it. This causes a lot of issues to Subaru throughout the anime causing him to lose his mind slowly, experiencing his own and his loved once death over and over.
This ability of his made me believe that the anime would get repetitive, and to be honest it kind of does. After you have seen 5 or maybe 6 episodes you can predict what is going to happen in the next episode. This made me worried, and I lost hope but then a little later in the anime it picked up and there were a lot of twists and turns that is very unexpected. It was very refreshing when these mind twists started to appear.
Art: 8/10
I really love the art in Re:Zero. I think it is very vibrant colours and it is very pleasing to the eyes. The artist did an incredible job at the facial expressions and it makes the characters feel more alive. The main characters are very well drawn and I think there is a lot of difference, depth and uniqueness to each one of the characters.
Sound: 7/10
I loved the soundtrack of this anime, but anything else than that was nothing special. I do not have anything positive or negative thing to say about it. I think it is above average dubbing, but the soundtrack really pulls the rate up.
Character: 10/10
This is the best part of Re:Zero by far.
Subaru is the protagonist of the story and a shut-in otaku in his own world and when he arrives at the in the new world he is not an overpowered at all, even though he has a few bad ass moments in the anime. Subaru is a heartwarming guy with a lot of spunk and humour, he also gives great advice to his fellow comrades throughout the anime. Throughout the anime, Subaru is a very dynamic character and he changes a lot- Subaru has the power of return to death, that allows him to return to an automatically saved checkpoint, but only after he dies. This causes a lot of trouble for Subaru because he experiences the death of his loved ones and himself a couple of dozen times. This causes Subaru to become more and more paranoid, anxious and scared. The worst part about the ability return to death is that he can not tell anyone about it or he will experience a tremendous amount of pain, or cause the death to the person he is telling. This makes him sort to comedy so he can cover it all. This makes him keep all of the different feelings that he experience inside of him and after a while, he snaps. We feel for him throughout the anime and some of us can kind of relate to the feeling.
Emilia is the main heroine and one of the five contestants to become the new queen. She has white hair and is half-elf, half-human. She has also a contract with a spirit that is called Puck. She saves Subaru from a gang of thugs in the first episode. Emilia is a beautiful, loving and caring heroine but because of an evil witch that is said to be white-haired and half-elf, she undergoes a lot of discrimination by the villagers. She is also a dynamic character that changes a lot through the anime and it is mostly because of Subarus influence.
Rem is petite, cute and funny with blue hair and has a sister named Ram with Pink hair. They both work as a maid at a huge mansion where Emilia and Roswaal lives. She is a demon with extraordinary fighting abilities and magic. Because Ram and Rem are twins they only have one horn each. Rem is more evolving than Emilia, and by that I mean she develops a lot throughout the anime even more than the "supposedly" main heroine. Rem starts off by being a tease alongside with her sister against Subaru, but after a while Rem develops feelings for Subaru after he risks his life for her multiple times. She even calls Subaru her hero. Rem is probably one of the most unique character ideas I have run into and she turns out to be probably the reason why I love this anime so much.
Enjoyment: 8/10
Even though this anime was kind of predictable at times, and do not get me wrong it is only a small portion of the anime that is predictable, its overall enjoyment was huge. Not only because of its uniqueness, but also because of the twists and turns the anime took. The art was very pleasing and the character designs were overall very good. The character development was also great so I enjoyed it a lot.
Overall: 8/10
With these individual scores, the anime gets a solid 8 rating in my book. It is a very good anime and I recommend it if you are curious about it or want a good show to watch.
I highly recommend watching to at least episode 18 because it is one of the best episodes of anime I have watched in a very long time. If I were to rate each episode, episode 18 would get an 11/10 rating for sure.
Thank you for reading
