Not sure why this is getting such low reviews.
It's a short read but very worth it. It's a wholesome and complete story about a guy and his crush on his well muscled next door neighbor.
Art is solid, not ground breaking but more than good enough to convey the story
Character designs are great, simple, but they suit the personalities of the characters well. Also Ruby just looks great. From depth perspective the characters don't have a ton of detail to their back stories but enough to create a convincing story around them, flaws, insecurities, and all.
Very enjoyable read that can be completed in a causal afternoon.
I
...
like muscle girls, so maybe I'm bias. Just read it.

Firstly, don't listen to any reviews of this that came out before 2021, trust me on this. Secondly, this is primarily a fan service beach episode, if you want to see that then watch it, if you don't, then don't.
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON III AHEAD
Okay so in season 2 we were introduced to Cassandra. Now as we know she gets visions of the future which everyone around her thinks are meaningless. We as the audience know that they are always accurate but metaphorical. For example seeing a rabbit jump over the moon and eat the sun.
This OVA starts off normal and it's just normal fan
...
service stuff, the last few minutes get really weird and a lot of characters show up that shouldn't be there, and say a lot of things that don't make any sense in the context of the OVA. Then we cut to Cassandra who wakes up from her prophetic dream, turns out everything we saw was a dream.
But her dreams come true, though never directly. The OVA basically covers the plot to season 3. When he finds out that the mushrooms are alive he decides to protect them. Finn says that a mushroom will always be a mushroom, same thing he says about monsters. Bell blocks his path saying "These are my game/prey" which is what he says when defending Wiene. This is also why Ais is on the island with them, she's the only one outside the familia who ends up believing in Bell and the only other one who learns the truth of the Xenos.
Basically the weird ending to the OVA that feels like you're tripping hard is actually a cleaver hint at the events coming up in season 3. Most people didn't get this because to understand this you would have to have read ahead, or be like me and write a review after seeing season 3.
Anyway, beach episode, if that isn't enough to convince you I don't know what will.

Keeping this quick. If you're watching this you know the story up to this point and I'm not going to spoil anything.
If you're reading this after the season is over, completely forget about everything said below and just binge the entire season already, what are you waiting for?
This story keeps getting more and more hype every episode, the only issue is the pacing. It's both good and bad. There is a lot of world building that had to be done this season as Rimuru ventures more outside of his own forest so because of that there is a lot of talking. This is ultimately good
...
for the story but it feels like a bit of a c*ck tease seeing as we know there are awesome events and battles coming near the end of the season. It's not bad it's just agonizing to wait every week.

Long reviews tend be people pretending they're way deeper than they are so I'll keep this short. But if you don't like to read then,
TL;DR:
It's just a better Monster Musume, better characters, better character designs, and an actual story. No wonder the writer of Musume hired the writer of this series to do their light novel adaptation. Just a fun, lighthearted, watch. I watched it in a day (though in two sittings) so take that as you will.
Story 7:
He's a doctor for monsters, he goes around healing various monsters in a "Monster of the week" type scenario, though characters are actually linked back and do
...
play roles later on. While there are a lot of male monsters shown, as you would expect most of the focus is on the girls, no complaints from me. The story is solid. If you want a monster girl show this is probably one of the better actual stories out there. It's a feel good story with not a ton of depth, which is pretty standard.
Art 5:
It's weak, simple as that. The character designs are really quite good but the budget was clearly lacking, but overall it's passable.
Sound 6:
Not noticeably bad but nothing special.
Characters 8:
Honestly every character in here is a just better written version of the same monster in Monster Musume, except maybe Arachne VS Rachnera. VAs are well cast too. Less frustrating to watch compared to many of the other stereotypical characters you get in these shows.
Enjoyment 8:
It's a very pleasant watch. Don't think of it as some deep series, don't think of it as soft core p*rn like Interspecies Reviewers, or what Monster Musume can be at times, though there are some scenes here and there that go in that direction (but they generally stop well short of anything too scandalous). Honestly just a fun, lighthearted, watch. I watched the entire thing in a day.

Underrated would be an understatement. While some of the early reviews for this show may not have been stellar, I can tell you that it picks up as it progresses. The story becomes deeper, darker and more multifaceted and despite what others have said, the show isn't based on some pro or against gun philosophy, it has nothing to do with guns really.
The real moral battle of the show is between humans, war, technology, and what it truly means to be human.
We get a wide cast of interesting characters each with their own backstory, though most are not yet explored in depth, i can tell
...
you from the passing this is on track for a second season.
Art and sound are great. The world is a fantastic, if common, future dystonia brought about by a global war and struggling with the deeper integration between man and technology. Music is also great and i love the OP.
Animation is solid and action is well done and thrilling. I can't recall any situations where i saw CGI, which either means there is none or it's very well done.
Overall you should do yourself a favor and pick this show up. The first few episodes might make it seem like it's going to be some episodic crime drama but give it a second and you'll be hooked.
Edit: I was totally right about it being on track for a second season, second season is here and I'm hyped.
