Both are science fiction dystopias, with a similar tone. They're both psychological, and have their surreal moments, though the end of Akira is far more surreal and weird than anything in Ergo Proxy. They both have themes of "breaking out of the world" and destroying the old, corrupt, crumbling regime to start anew.
