There is both adoration and dislike when it comes to the Chainsaw man manga, which is not anything surprsing as there is love and hate for everything today. I myself do not really stand on any of these "sides". The manga itself is very intresting and brings a sense of enjoyment, I found myself wanting to know more about the world and some of the characters, but not much worldbuilding was included nor background of most characters I feel. So it is definetely not a perfect masterpiece, but still has its unique parts to offer.
The manga is definetely not afraid of touching on what could
...
be considered "extreme" themes; such as grooming, manipulation, pedophilia and sometimes vulgar scenes of gore or vomiting. I would not say that these things are what makes it stand out, but since it has become a manga popular to even people who generally might not stick their nose in such themes, it might have been blown out of proportion of its weight.
However, what I liked about these scenes is that they are not exactly taken in a serious manner. The characaters are put in situations where they could expect the worst but it unravels in an ironic form. In other words, cynical humour.
As for the characters, I did not deeply connect with them which is fine and not at all a requirement. But it could be important for an individual to connect with a character or characters to pull them into the story even more. Denji, the protagonist, has information provided on his background and we get to see him go through different experiences and develop as a person. Many also consider him perverted and I would say that he does not really fall into that description. I see him more of a teenage boy, who has been abandond and neglected since young, who is looking for a connection and expresses it in a rather lustful way. This is also probbly why I do not hate his character, because most "perverted charcaters" act in an unpleasant way that annoys me.
Another character who we get to know a bit further of is Aki, but other than that there is not much. Which is sad since I really liked the characters who were introduced. However, I thinkt the reason for this is because any character could die and most characters have a reason for dying, therefore it might not be necessary to give a lot of background information of the characters. But I can not deny that some more details of other main characters than Aki and Denji would not be so bad. Fujimoto might provide that in side stories or if there comes another manga.
The story itself is competent and the way Fujimoto handles the paneling of the manga can be subjective depending on what you are expecting. It is not filled with too much text and the chapters are not too long. I sometimes felt like the fighting went by quickly and it left me thinking "oh okay, moving on I guess...". So, I do not think it is a deep and thorough story, but more of a quick, entertaining and new story. I did not once get bored when reading it, but I did become slightly confused with what was going on and what the objective was.
So to say, Chainsaw man is a manga which offers some insane and comedic parts but also shows an emotional slice. There are a few things that could be improved, like the pacing and build of the story, but it does not make it a bad piece of work.
