Card and summon concept Great.
Characters, Big nope.
As someone who was using XYZ before even watch Zexal I find it a great card concept. The Numbered XYZ cards had some good story points that got forgotten or drowned out by the cast.
Yuya was just annoying, with way too much plot saving him, the side cast are bland and typical side characters. Does improve in S2 but still bottom of the YGO leader board for me.
In all fairness it is more child friendly then OG, GX or 5D's so if you want your kids to get into YGO it's a good start point.

Childhood Nostalgia, I started of as a minor fan of the YGO series when I was young, but I became a major fan around the GX era so as it shows, GX has a place in my heart as it's what me into YGO in general and gave a great sequel (5-Ds), Jaden is a great character regardless of being cliché, the Art at the time was amazing, minus not getting Season 4 in England the Story was great, and had a nice plot twist mid Season 3 but who am I to say them, if want to get into YGO but not sure on
