So after the dog shit arc called Alvarez I was really hoping that Hiro will redeem himself with Edens Zero. This hope of mine wasn't based on blind trust either because Hiro can truly write good shit like Rave master and heck even the early Fairy Tail arcs like tower heaven and few others had really good moments. So did he deliver? So far It's hard to say because the series is still in it's prologue arc but from what I'v seen I have yet to be disappointed. Now lets elaborate a little.
Story:
The setting of the story is quite unique for a new shounen.
...
It's been a long time since I'v heard of fantasy shounen. Last I heard was chrono trigger. The story seems to be setting up to some major arc in the future and it really does a good job at world building. In the first 40 chapters that I have read we have already seen different life conditions like the ones on norma,Robotic planets like grandbell and even literal digital planets. It's also interesting how a lot of these planets are connected in some way or the other and honestly the story element seems to be what hiro is mainly focusing on right now. And speaking of world building it's also interesting to note that the main goals of the MC crew is to go out of the sakura cosmo which would give us even more world building.
Characters:
So far I would only describe the characters of Edens Zero as okay. The first Chapter does a really good job at introducing Shiki. Like why he is so obsesed with friendship like a child and It also introduces a side trauma which Shiki actually has to overcome which already makes him more interesting that Natsu. It's also important to note that the story is actually focused on his goal unlike some other series(can ya guess) and if Hiro actually doesn't mess up Shiki actually has a lot of potential because this is the first time he has seen the world outside of his planet essentially building his character from the groundup. Now aside from Shiki there isn't much to go about the other characters because we havn't seen them shine yet since its still new but i have some high hopes.
Art:
The art in EZ is extremely similar to the ones on FT. Some of the character designs look extremely similar too. But overtime there has been some original character designs like Jinn, sister, etc. However there is the occasional god like art here and there. Tbh i can't really comment much on this category since idk how to talk abt these things.
Fight Scenes:
Pretty much all the fight scenes so far are very simplistic. It all pretty much boils down to shiki one shotting some dudes. However one fight scene does stand out from the rest and that is shiki's fight against Jinn which is easily the best fight scene so far. Hiro did a really good job at implementing shiki's gravity power in this fight against an android wind user like Jinn. The street fight is very eerily similar to the ones in spiderman.
Conclusion:
So far its not that bad as the haters make it out to be. It is one of my favorite ongoing new shounen so far(right behind kimetsu no yaiba, promised neverland and MHA) and has the potential of being one of the best shounen(just like rave).
