Princess Lover is pretty well known between people that are into harem genre. I've read many stuff about it being different from other harems, but Princess Lover is indeed just another harem. However there was something different about Princess Lover compared to many harems/ ecchi that we have today that encouraged me to write a review.
Story:
To go straight off to my point about the difference between Princess Lover and other harems is that it had a story. Something I really want to focus on is the protagonist, Arima Teppei. Arima Teppei and his grandfather were probably the ones that snatched all
...
the meaningful quotes in the entire anime. The anime studios has become so corrupt, the"typical" harems today have become, "the girls have big boobs, but the story is crap, but girls have big boobs.". Indeed I am nuts for 2D girls like many of us here, but I really disagree with such nonsense. In a harem field, having unique and attractive girls should be a given. There are just never ending list of girls that can be in a harem field and I have seen that much of it. Harems are no longer about how attractive the girls are, but what will make it different from other harems are the protagonist. There can just be so many fan-services in harems, but if the main character sits, so does the story.
Now, Princess Lover didn't have such amazing story, but the fact is, it did have one. The author was writing with a purpose and he did have a message that he wanted to share with the audience. The one that will fulfill this will be done by Teppei. I think it is about time harem animes change their ways a little about having pretty dominant and stable protagonist, because he still is the main focus and the story moves on based off of him. Not only that, but he is representing the author's ultimate message. What are harem authors doing these days?
It did lack motions in action scenes, so I wouldn't say it was super actiony, but it did have action moments and it's thrills. Starting from the first episode, like all the other action movies and animes, it would constantly jump to here and there with such inconstant events. While continuing with the story, they definitely don't miss out with the fan-services and the comedies. and ofc the jiggly boobies for all the ecchi fans.
art:
The art of Princess Lover was probably the best part of the anime. But it is something a studio can't miss out when producing a ecchi anime. The character designs for all the girls and even the adults suit them very well. It took me a while to realize, I was kind of disgusted with Teppei's character design. It wasn't all that bad tho.
sound:
I really don't even remember sounds in this anime. I rushed through it, skipped all openings and endings, and barely bothered to listen to the music. The only music that caught my attention was in the very last episode, which really was out of place... In the very last scene... YEA. you all know what the hell i'm talking about. They just couldn't find a suitable music for the last epic scene. It totally killed Teppei's awesome speech for that blonde guy, whatever his name was.
character:
The girls of this anime were just like every other harem anime girls. nothing special. Just a maid, and 3 rich girls. Although I don't mind the girls being typical harem girls, Teppei was best. The speeches he gave during the most dramatic moments for the girls was very encouraging and acceptable. Many other harem animes disappoint me when the protagonist gives crappy speech as if it was something so great... Even if it was great, the character would drop back to zero as if his life lesson just went past, and became history. Teppei didn't lose nor forget the things he learned throughout the story, and he even said some great stuff in the last scene. ahh words are good stufff. :')
Enjoyment:
I enjoyed the anime. cause i like harem, and tsundere services, with princesses and maid girls :) and bouncing boobs. anything more? oh and it did have great settings and some of the episodes felt like mission impossible or something. Some serious action stuff in this anime. I was pretty surprised.
Yea.. I'm getting lazy with the review, and i basically said what i wanted to say. It was one of the good harems I've watched, but the problem probably laid on how it was directed. I don't fault the seiyuus but the anime wasn't all the professional overall.
Harems don't always have to be 1 guy + 20million girls with no story. but I'll cope with it and wait until the day, someone comes to realization of the failures in the harems being produced today. I await the day for this someone.

Somewhere in this world, someone is fighting for you.
Witches and Demons, that cannot be seen in our eyes, are all over the world, dragging people into despair and causing depression, murder, suicide, and many other crimes. It is the job of Mahou Shoujo(Magical Girls) to find and kill them before they have their way with other human beings.
It sounds like becoming almost like an Hero in a movie where you can save people's life. One life that could save many; it doesn't sound bad but almost too perfect. If one useless life can save these people than there's no reason
...
to hesitate... That is what they believed...
After their death, witches drop a small item called "Grief Seed". These are used by MahouShoujos to cleanse their own "Soul Gems". If it isn't cleansed for a while, the MahouShoujo will lose her life.
It didn't take too long for them to come to realization of their mistakes. Like witches, they became invisible to everyone. Their sacrifice was not there to be seen by the people. Countless number of people were saved by their actions, but nobody was there to witness it happen. You will not thank someone for something that you don't see them do; you will not praise someone that you cannot see. This was now reality: you are risking your life for some guy you could possibly careless about and you will never be appreciated. They too got sick of this and they no longer fought for anyone. For pure reason of survival, they had no choice but to fight.
Story:
My only intentions for this anime was for some MahouShoujo Moeness. From the very first episode, I do not see Madoka become a MahouShoujo. Starting from episode 2, the only reason I continued this anime was to see Madoka become a MahouShoujo.(I will not be happy for a LONG time.) Instead of Moeness I get ridiculous amount of drama. I was totally dumb-founded and speechless by the end of the series. Immediately I desperately searched the web for the culprit behind my tears.
Google: Mahou Shojo Madoka Magica
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Wikipedia
Written by: Gen Uro- *FACEDESK*
Gen Urobuchi have clearly been proven to me that he is a dangerous existence. The World started to make sense again. The story of MSMM was very similar to Fate/Zero, where he proves the misconception of justice. I would have prepared myself for this, but I did not even imagine him to be associated with a MahouShojo Genre. He has rewritten the genre in such beauty; his story has brought me to tears once again.
10/10
Art:
I found MSMM's art to be pretty sloppy in many ways. Actually to reword it, It wasn't at the best works compared to many other animes. The motions weren't very fluent and sometimes the characters seemed as if they weren't sketched at it's best. Most of all, I found the wiggly worlds really unappealing. The whole witch and everything were not even animated. I was totally disappointed about how ugly the monsters were... There was a cotton with a mustache that had butterfly wings as it's legs. (That's damn creative, I'll give credits for that...)
Well the reason why I'm not gonna go hater is because there's a really good excuse for this kind of art work. To begin with, MSMM was produced by Shaft studio. Starting from 2004 Shaft has been working on lowering their paint group and replacing them with the digital group. Their digital group has been growing since then and the results have come out in 2009 and 2011. Yes, Bakemonogatari & Mahou Shojou Madoka Magica. Even the best studios in all of Japan is desperate for better paint group but lowering it was declaring that they wished to go bankrupt. However they disguised the weakness of their sketches and paint works by many digital and computer affects in such genius ways. I've seen improvements in Mahou Shojo Madoka Magica so I'd say they really deserve a pat in the head... or a round of applause...
9/10
Sound:
The opening theme was very catchy. I heard Claris sang it, who also sang the opening for Ore no Imouto... It sounded more like a pop song of some kind but the opening video did a really nice job to highlight the dark theme of the anime. The musics that they used in the "wiggly land"(I'll call it wiggly, cause the images are wiggling) were gave great impression of thrill and the chill. Some of the musics really hit the spot to make me cry in the right moments and I've never really sensed any awkward moments where that one little note seemed as if it was lost...
10/10
Characters:
Despite being all depressing and dark themed anime, as MahouShojos all the characters still have their Moeness. This is probably the reason that gives even stronger impact to the people. It makes you wonder why these kinds of moe 2D girls have to suffer being a MahouShoujo... Madoka's excessive kindness, Sayaka's sad yet energetic, Mami's lady-like senior, Homuro's mysterious background and extreme talent, Kyouko's tomboy attitude. All of these characters don't seem to be the most original ideas. However the story moves on while each of these girls' lives are being distorted and changed.
10/10
Enjoyment:
The story was never too repetitive nor did it ever slow it's pace. It kept me impatient yet flowing in the right pace. One episode never ran boring all of the sudden nor did the other standout excessively compared to the others. It kept the right rhythm of the ups and downs like the graph of sinX. I decided to stay up to finish the series despite the fact that I had SAT exam the next day. Short but it has carried out a very heavy topic. It's very easy to watch the series in one shot...
10/10
overall 10/10
Story was good, not because it made me cry, but it also gave the most exciting ending. Art was fairly interesting, but you really should prepare for the different style. Music of the series really helped to keep the climax of a scene. Characters were just unforgettable, and it kept the night before exam very enjoyable.
uhh maybe not a "masterpiece" but probably one of the outstanding and must-be-recognized anime.
Idk about others, but I wish they'd finish this with a short OVA of a nice epilogue. Nothing big like a movie or 2nd season.. totally disagree...

Something to know before you watch this anime is that "Yosuga no Sora: In solitude, where we are least alone" is an eroge(or erotic game), which is a visual novel that contains H scenes.
If you started this anime looking for an harem or some romance, this anime wouldn't satisfy you at all... If you are against hentai, than it'll probably ruin the moments for you.
Story
The story starts out with Haruka and Sora returning to their hometown. It isn't the most creative idea out there, but Haruka and Sora are siblings who lost their parents in an accident and has to live
...
out their lives on their own. Pretty cheesy, but the way this anime carried it out was simply great.
Like all harem animes, all these other girls start to make their appearance and shows interest in Haruka. However, the reason why this anime shouldn't be seen as a harem is because unlike all the other harem where they move the story with the main couple as the center and have the other girls trying to grab the guy's attention. In Yosuga no Sora, a separate time and space is given to each and every one of the girls. The reason why this much respect is given to each arc is because this anime is intended to copy the eroge's storyline exactly.
In an eroge, you click throughout the game as you read the conversations and understand the plot. Every now and than, they give you couple of choices in the game so that you may choose your own ending with the girl you like. Yosuga no Sora simply shows the guy falls in love with one girl... and they just move on to the next girl. The funny thing is that they simply rewind the whole story as if you are loading your saved data in a game. The anime had no flaws in copying the eroge's plot, with all the H scenes for each girl, plus that "Fin." in the end, which you also get in every end of an eroge's arc. But if you asked me was the story itself great? As a guy, I thought that the emotions and thought the guy had was painted clearly. The struggles and stress that he and the other girls had was shown in many ways where as a viewer, you can really feel what they're going through.
Just one more thing to add about the story... It's really, and VERY, odd to see the guy sharing H scenes with every one of the girls... but it doesn't matter cause it's anime. They pull back the story every time with each girl...
Art and sound
The motions of the characters, syncing and mouthing the words, opening/ ending music, and even musics that were played during crucial moments when they had to emphasize it with a tiny push with some piano notes. I would say the music was overall very good and the arts, with character design were very eye catching.
Characters
The character-build in this story is very good. Cheerful and hard working, daughter of the wealthy, the very understanding senior neighbor, and the twintail loli twin sister. Just the best thing about this anime is probably the protagonist, Haruka. He seems very simple minded, but he strongly represent reality. The very "innocent" and "trying-hard" with "never giving up" kind of fake guys in a harem story really never exists. Haruka knows when to push further with a girl and he gets straight to the point if he loves them. I've never liked indecisive guys. Like we could all see, the main intentions in this story is the forbidden love between a brother and a sister. Like how the whole world didn't know, Sora is the very last arc of the story. They went pretty hard core on the porn on her arc... but i was really amused by the storyline. The whole "sharing love" scenes are not only fan-service intended, but it reall hardens the emotions and later on, it can really break over you as their love gets really twisted. Even though the tape might rewind several times, the characters never lose their build. They don't suddenly go changing their personalities on you.
The maid's little comedy life in the end of every episode is classic too. She's a very well made character with no exception that she's only a side character. :)
Yosuga no Sora wasn't the typical harem, but rather a very enjoyable slice of life. Don't get too caught up with the H scenes... they actually help the story move on. I really couldn't understand the low ratings. I enjoyed it so much that I watched the whole series in one shot.
