Before trusting this recommendation, One should be noted that this recommendation is based on my subjective interpretation of these two pieces of abstract work. So, it may not be works for you if your interpretation about the works doesn't allign with mine at all. Comparing Inaka Isha with Tenshi no Tamago is like comparing physics with mathematics. While the nature of both works express the similar idea, one of them can be said having a higher abstraction level than the other, judged based on their visual presentation. Both anime express the inner conflict of the respective authors related to different ideas. In Inaka Isha, Franz Kafka express the dillema of the main character regarding his job as a doctor. The conflict arises between the side of the character who feels the need to do his job as good as how society expects him to with the other side of the character who feels helpless considering many factors could influence his ability and the low self-efficacy and self-esteem he has, especially related to his job. This idea is expressed through the main character who usually thinks too much, reasoning the choises that he could choose and rationalization of the choises when he faces a situation that requires or seems pushed him to make a decision. In contrast, Tenshi no Tamago uses a different style of visual presentation. The inner conflict that is presented in the show is the inner conflict of the "third character", the true character who is not shown in the show, the author. Different from Inaka Isha, the idea that is expressed in Tenshi no Tamago is related to the inner conflict about faith in God. Girl presents the idea of the side of character who wants to believe in God blindly without thinking, and Boy presents the idea of the other side of character who looks for the truth. Take a side the main idea, both anime are surreal and using so much dark colors, describing how depressing the world in the shows are - the main theme/idea of the respective works. Not only that, both anime share the same type of aesthetic, the background art and characters that talk more than the dialogue in the shows itself, expressing the idea that they try to convey. There's also a contrast between the two when it comes to how the background artwork and characters' action "speak" in the both show. In Tenshi no Tamago, those two elements play as a visual methapor without any exaggeration, while in Inaka Isha, the exaggeration is real. Like, it may disturb you when you see the head of the doctor become bigger. If you liked one of these works, I am confident in saying, you most likely will like the other one. But there's also a chance you will be disappointed in trusting this recommendation, especially if you care alot about visual. Because even though the artstyle in both shows are similar, the way they are presented/animated in the both shows are so different.

...then you might like Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! add

NHK and Watamote has not that much similarity regarding how the show executed. But they are similar at the theme they explored, which is social anxiety. NHK focuses on some characters with different types of social anxiety. While in Watamote, the story focuses on the main female character who also experiencing the same issue. This make these two anime a characters-centered show with inner monologue in the main characters mind shown frequently. Both also contain dark humour using the exaggeration of characters thoughts in general and inner conflict in particular. Even though both shows exploring similar issue, these two anime can be feel a really different things from other perspectives. NHK has more dark colors used with simplistic and "realistic" character design that can be seen from the physical attributes of the character, such as body proportion and hair color. This can be create a different atmosphere than Watamote which used more bright colors with a "not so realistic" character design. The factor that can be influencing the atmosphere also may come from the setting, where NHK deals with adult while Watamote deals with a higschool student. They also different in the "seriousness" level. NHK, while having comedy scenes here and there, it never try to out of the box of "serious" in discussing the serious issue. While Watamote, more like a parody, a comedy focused anime. So, don't expect something serious from watamote.

What will happen if we don't have memories about our past? Ergo Proxy and Casshern Sins are anime which have been setting up in the post apocalyptic world, where humanity almost reaching their end. Our protagonist in both series, do not have any memories related to their past which led them to confusion about their identity and the purpose of their existence. Both have been pushed to take a journey because everyone who get involved with them usually end up in a problem or even died. Both also have a special ability that make then a really strong characters in their series. Talking about similarity, these two shows have so many similarities in the part of characters, setting, premises. They also share the same atmospheric feel with dark undertones, seriousness and a bit of "romance". The only significant difference between the two lies on the character design, music, the ending and their philosophical quotes. In EP, philosophical quotation plays an important role in explaining the story.

Serial Experiments Lain and Ghost Hound are two anime that trying to explore reality, the "real" world and an alternate world; a world of matter and a world of form; through exploring the psychology of characters. Both anime have a very similar feel to them not only based on the themes they try to explore, but also they share the same character design, slow progression of plot and similar feel of seriousness. Even though both deal with existential theme, there's a contrast between their approaches. GH focuses more on the human brain and relating them to supernatural element, traditional beliefs and scientific knowledge. While SEL focuses on computer-based of world, Wired.

Life is hard. Sometimes we face a situation that pushed us to the edge to the point we want to run away, escape from our reality. Boogiepop Phantom and Paranoia Agent have shared escapism as one of their main themes. Some of the first episodes of them focus on different characters with a serious life issue to the point they want to escape from reality. Both anime can be considered as a serious show, even though in contrast, PA have some funny moments and comic relief (even having one episode that full of comedy). While BP is a serious show without comedy with a really slow progression of story and minimalist dialogue. Though overall, both anime feel the same, especially if you are a type of watcher who focusing on anime's meaning when watching. If you like anime that focuses on the characters that struggling with life issues or escapism theme. Then these two anime are for you.
