A child whom was seemingly innocent, now struggling to survive in a bloody war-filled era. Vinland Saga takes place in the 11th century, the age of vikings in the shoes of Thorfinn, whom is on a path of revenge which ultimately culminates into his redemption and aspiration. The story is carefully sewn by Makoto Yukimura and animated by WIT studio, the same studio that AOT was animated from, insisting consistency in every nook and cranny, we experience wonderful sound design with the music of Yamada Yutaka, whom also did the famous Tokyo Ghoul's music.
~Story~ 10/10
There's little moe, and much emotion. In the midst
...
of Thorfinn's Journey of Revenge, we see him grow and mature, and at the same time, we're able to feel the pain of our main protagonist, from the pillaging and murder, or to the times of war, He pushes through on the notion of avenging his dear father, whom he loved so very much.
The story overall isn't far fetched, and doesn't delve into the realms of fantasy, keeping realism intact. Overall Accuracy of the swords, pommels, character design and war tactics are a 8/10, aside from the heroic "superhero" individuals who we can forgive as a notion to the Heroic and Ruthless, Vikings of old.
~Art~ 9/10
The art style of the anime fits rather well with the overall context of Vinland saga and the history of it. Brutal and gore-filled, the battles are drawn very well, very realistic. This goes for the background of the frames too, as well as the landscapes showing the devastation of the battles that were fought. Hopefully this continues as we progress through the story.
In addition to this, the facial expressions are definitely the most outstanding part of the art style. I have to argue that these strongly depict properly how the characters feel at times; and, this was not just limited to the main characters; even background characters aren't spared.
~Characters~
The characters simply blew me away, I don't think I have ever seen a anime with such deep character development. Each character has a very unique and human feel to them. The characters here are unpredictable and each major character has a very detailed background that help progress the story and keep things fresh. I especially loved the way the characters here rely on their strategy as much as they rely on their brute strength. It's important to note the historical reference of these characters as well.
~Enjoyment~
Vinland saga is a magnificent manga (I recommend if you haven't read it) and it's even better animated; and in any case, I am thoroughly enjoying it in every aspect. From the intriguing story to the incredible character development and design, and the brutality of the art that catches you from the first moment, Vinland saga is definitely now one of the top historical Shows out there, and definitely a must read for anyone searching for a Viking based manga. Recommendable to anyone with interest in the historical, action genre, however, I would say it's just not suitable for younger viewers/readers.
Thank you for reading!
