Sousou no Frieren

A long-lived being (Holo in Ookami to Koushinryou, Frieren in Sousou no Frieren) embarks on a journey with (short-lived) humans. What especially makes these two series similar is that they are very character-driven and atmospheric in nature. And unlike a lot of fantasy series, while there are some action scenes, those are certainly not the main draw. Half of the enjoyment comes from the witty dialogue and banter between the main characters. The other half comes from the characters' interactions with the various villages and people that they meet on their journey, along with the palpable sense of the progression of time throughout the series that adds a depth of reality to both narratives. Taking all of these aforementioned factors into consideration, Frieren and Spice and Wolf's well-written, authentic characters and the vibrant, dynamic setting provide you with an immersion that almost makes you feel like a participant on the journey as well.

Sonny Boy
add

Both are rather short coming-of-age stories that lean especially on the chaotic and rapid aspect of growing up. Despite the difference in when the titles were released (FLCL in 2000, Sonny Boy in 2021...two decades apart) both are very experimental works that make use of unique visuals and gripping music to amplify their messages. For both series, you are often left wondering what you watched and the broader meaning behind the episode, but upon closer analysis and rewatching scenes things start clicking and making sense as you start contextualizing things.

Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan

Are you a fan of gag animes? Then you'd love School Rumble! Both series have an endearing and large cast of characters, each with their own zany archetypes that parody the self-referential character molds you find throughout anime. Each series is episodic in nature, with mini skits/segments that run the course of each episode. Only difference is School Rumble is more of a romcom/soap opera style series, while Saiki K has less romance, although it does serve as a subplot in many of the gags throughout the series. If you enjoyed one, then there's a really good chance you'll enjoy and laugh your eyes out watching the other!

Golden Time

While very different in length and setting (Law school vs work life in Tokyo for Golden Time and Rec respectively) both series do a very stellar job painting the ebbs and flows of relationships in a realistic and simple manner - something you don't encounter often in the anime medium. The main characters in both shows are realistic humans who make mistakes and learn from them, and as such the relationships have a lifelike depth to them. Both series further their narratives by coupling somber moments of retrospection with lighthearted humor, which made Golden Time and Rec a treat to watch.

Prison School

Both have the same Shawshank Redemption-esque theme (young men in prison), but genre-wise they are complete opposites in that Prison School is more of a laidback comedy/ecchi anime while Rainbow is a serious/dark historical drama that talks about the life of delinquents in the aftermath of WW2. Funny enough, both deal with the theme of brotherhood and friendship in their own unique way (Prison school more humorously, Rainbow more seriously) and I enjoyed them despite the fact the mood was completely different in both. Both also feature an endearing cast of main characters who strive to prove their innocence and get out of prison.
