I initially started this manga in middle school and never got around to finishing it (though I had no right to be reading this at ages 12 and 13 with the blood and fanservice). I tried to finish it again as an adult, but Idk if I ever got around to it. I finally finished it tonight and here's what I think:
Good: Art, the action, the character writing and development,
Bad: The fan disservice (Mai's fourteen what the actual shit. The last page was awkward to read), the weird comments Intetsu's roomate makes about Mai (like previously stated she's fourteen what the shit) the racism towards
...
Mongolian and Vietnamese people (the dude who created this manga is East Asian, why is he portraying Hong and Baion as being goofy looking, awkward, mean and oafish? Like in their initial profile pics from the agency, they're drawn in that realistic style that the mangaka does, and are portrayed as realistic looking children, but then when you get to know them they're more cartoonishly exaggerated design wise)
I wish there was more focus on other psychic children. Are other ones being weaponized too? Are there more than five? Like any in any Middle Eastern, African or Hispanic countries? Still a fun read. Take out the fan disservice though. Also it does get gory and there are some animal brutality scenes. Not for everyone.

A very heavy manga that goes into depth about the cruelty of humanity. Honestly, I like this better than the anime because of how much it goes into more of the story and the background of the diclonii and Lucy's history. Art is gorgeous but pretty gory and does not hold any punches.
My criticisms are the bits of awkward fanservice, Kouta's cousin's gross crush on him and general whininess, the fact that Mayu's father never got punished for the shit he pulled (would've loved to see his head lopped off), and Bando while he's SUPPOSED to be a butthead, he's unnecessarily unkind to Mayu. Mayu
...
is a fucking sweetheart, what is your damage dude?! While I'm sad that Lucy had to die in the manga, I'm glad at least it was her being noble and redeeming herself to Kouta.
I want a reboot of the anime, but one that follows the manga more closely and has the cute style like the 2004 anime, but darker more akin to the manga and expands even more about the history of diclonii. And to include Nozomi, she's the reason WHY it was named Elfen Lied in the first place! And maybe cut down a bit on the awkward fanservice and cut out the Kouta cousin incest arc? IDK. Or just a sequel to Elfen Lied about more of the diclonii, I want more diclonius stories, Lynn Okamoto!
I don't recommend this to everyone-a VERY acquired taste.

This is a fun and lovely story about friendship and emotionally transitioning out of high school, all while trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. Yep you read that right there. It's one of those shows that starts out as sweet and happy but the big reveal is at the end of the first episode. Like you have to watch the first episode or two and then get hit with the punch.
The characters are all memorable and fun in their own way. I feel for Yuki as I too was afraid to graduate and I was friendlier with some of my teachers than my classmates (eventually
...
came out of my shell later on), wore a black beanie with ears (albeit mine were bear ears) and was labeled as "stupid" (though Yuki struggled in school, I didn't quite as much as she was, but I labeled as stupid by bullies) and have used escapism during traumatic situations (while hers was outright delusions, mine was moreso creating characters and stories).
Highly recommend, but not for people who dislike zombies and gore or mild fanservice.

This manga holds no punches, cuts no corners on what it is like to survive the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, especially as a young child. Though I have to warn readers, it veers into triggering territory such as war, child death, infant death, rape, murder, sexual assault, suicide, hanging, sickness, the whole nine yards (save for drugs, there aren't really any scenes or moments with drugs save for mild drinking and smoking maybe).
Admittedly the ending is a bit unrealistic considering it's bittersweet with a ray of optimism and the protagonist survives. I'm surprised how many people have been able to survive the bombings and
...
be able to live a long life after and tell the tale. I know I could not have been able to survive! This is why I don't believe in nuclear warfare.
My heart goes out to survivors of war, especially in situations where they were close to death or almost died. I reccomend this but not for squeamish or sensitive readers.

My favorite Manga series of all time. It is a very realistic and respectful take on what growing up with autism is like, specifically in Japan in the 2000's. Very heartwarming and gorgeously drawn story. This manga helped me develop a deeper understanding of my friends who most of them are on the spectrum (including me, who was not diagnosed until February 2011) and I was crestfallen when I found out about Keiko Tobe's passing. I am still not over her passing. I never will be.
However, my biggest criticism would have to be that it is super DATED. Like statistics and science on kids diagnosed
...
with autism is outdated, it is told from the perspective of adults taking care of kids with autism and not from an autistic person's point of view so there are some things that are stereotyping or treating it as an issue than just a trait of someone, etc. Heck, Tobe herself based this story on a friend's kid, not herself or her own direct experience. Even though it's the first (and only that I know of) representation of autism in manga (I've heard something about one of the characters in Belle being autistic, but not 100 percent confirmed), it does a magnificent job of representing autism on different levels and with different people, and other disabilities as well (there's a kid with dyslexia and another kid with autism and ADHD too!). I wish there were other anime that had confirmed autistic representation.
There needs to be an anime of this, based on the WHOLE manga, no arcs skipped, faithful, no corners cut. However it should be modernized so it's relatable to today's audience. The only thing is that Keiko Tobe wouldn't be able to be involved sadly. It would have to be done SUPER well and respectfully.
How not as much people know about this manga is beyond me! I didn't even discover it in a disability setting, just in my local library at the teen room!
Recommended for everyone. If you have a pulse, then what are you waiting for?!? READ THIS MANGA ASAP! Though IDK how easy it is to find online.
