oh yes, my current struggles rn are kanji and politeness levels (＾＾＃) and trying to remember, for example, all the conjugations for verbs and adjectives in the -tara conditional form... i know it's fixed with tons of immersion, but i get discouraged when i can't understand eeevery single word in one of those immersion listening videos. but one has to keep going!

Japanese is difficult but its worth it also if you like the culture and the language itself it gives you the motivation. There is many wonderful channels on youtube, you have many many free resorces too I assume english is your fluent language so it shouldnt be a problem for you to find good pages for learning japanese since most of them are in english:)

Turns out I didnt have to choose a 2nd foreign language Im starting in bioinformatics major btw! I think they want us to focus on english because both biology and informatics terms are pretty difficult so two languages would be too much to handle.. I think its even better cuz I can focus on english, korean and japanese a 4rd language would be beyond my limit lol

I see you started The Apothecary Diaries! How is it so far? Personally, I adored it, especially Maomao and Jinshi. It's interesting (and hilarious) to see how different their worlds are and how many misunderstandings can happen between them.

And you're watching Trigun too! I heard about it and it seems like something I'd enjoy. It has been on my list for years. ^^'

I like those stories too, although it can be done right and wrong. I hate when they try to make something serious but the characters are one dimensional.

Wow, that's really cool! Languages can be interesting. When I was in high school I could only learn English and German as foreign languages (everybody had to learn both) but I don't mind it since I wanted to learn these two anyway. I still try to improve my german but I'm not really persistent at it. I mostly try to learn new words, more complex sentences come later. I found a really cool browser extension called Toucan. You should try it if you use a Chromium based browser on PC (practically anything except Firefox, the last survivor with it's own engine, I respect and use it for that to express my support). You choose a language and it will translate a few words on a page to the language you set. You can then hover over them and see the original word. You can also bookmark words, mark them as learnt, and practice them independently. I really like it, but as I said, I almost always use Firefox. :(

Oh, watching NHK? One of my acquaintances studies Japanese and she said she is the only one in the class who isn't a weeb haha. Some of them even wear cosplay at school. But the reason I tell you this is that her favorite anime is NHK. So this must mean something.

Magical girl shows are the only ones where L, G and such overused letters are understandable. As one important criteria to become a magical girl is to... be a girl. So your team won't include any boys. I still don't count it as okay, but as long as it remains only suggestive it doesn't bother me much.

For me age gap romance is disturbing, and incest is the hardest to tolerate. But I'll give it a chance when I finally get to it.

I haven't seen Cardcaptor Sakura, but I was thinking about it, so thanks for sharing that information. I truly hate when an anime is not tagged properly and contains a "surprise". It's very, very unfair in my opinion.

Many elements of Eva were admittedly made to attract the audiences. So I completely understand you. But later it really got better and more meaningful. Or we just got used to it, who knows.

Understandable, I also try to remain more or less consistent with my ratings, at least with shows in the same genre.

Eva is special for me too. It's not a perfect show but it's so different, so unique. I started watching because of it's fame, got surprised by it's constant sexual subtext, and felt nostalgia for it's Star Trek-like episode structure. Also, the episode with Rei smiling at the end is especially nostalgic not only for that memorable moment, but because I watched it on a long bus ride and was anxious if I could finish it before I had to take off. ^^

School-Live is amazing. I absolutely recommend the manga. It's a binge from start to finish (save for a few chapters in the middle where the plot takes a break) and has a hugely different ending from the anime. At this point I must acknowledge that although the anime does change the plot of it's source material, but does it extremely well. Really. For example the speaker scene where is at the beginning of the manga, but it has much more impact at the end of the anime.

Actually, that's why I not rate some anime too. I just don't want to give a false rating (sometimes I do it anyway).

As for your question, I like surfing other people's profiles. And I not only search for matching anime and manga but also look at their friend list. I have velveteenvamp as a friend and that's how I found your profile.

I'm glad you liked Eva! Also, finally somebody who saw School-Live. It's a big favorite of mine, especially the manga.
