Just watch the old anime or read the manga. I had hopes for this anime to do something different while still keeping the quality of the storytelling and characterization, but this new adaption takes away both of those elements away sadly.
There are some good highlights within this series with the animation being one of them, but as much as I want to praise just the animation there is still a problem with its lack of action. Having every other episode just be filled with running away does not count as action. Even when there is finally confrontational action choreography, it doesn't live up to expectations.
...
The only fight I can really remember that was decent was when Elendira is introduced & the final confrontation with between Knives and Vash which laughably turned into Vash playing keep away from Knives. Both being fights towards the end of the season.
Now let's talk about the writing and pacing of this series, which is regrettably bad. This iteration of Vash The Stampede is the most depressing and mopey version of himself. There is nothing fun about him. The original story's environment/setting is set in a wasteland with barely a glimpse of hope for anything good to happen. Vash The Stampede is that glimpse of hope that takes on the burden of ironically being the face of humanity's hatred and fear. With that burden placed on him he still kept a friendly face and funny persona to evade these claims on him. Vash will always be the key of what the series needs as he is the comedic relief, story driver, and badass personality that makes Trigun what it is.
Sorry for the small rant on that topic, but I say this because this mopey version of Vash makes the series uninteresting and unwanted. I have no issue with the new design because I am open to reworks that bring a refreshing and exciting opportunity for characters. Only if they are good though...which this wasn't. Especially his left arm which is a worthless web-slinging wannabe. Who wrote this in?! Someone who didn't even know the title of the series; TRI-GUN. More like TRY-AGAIN.
2nd to last note, what is that design for LIVIO?! If you have read the manga you know he is WAAAAY more badass then whatever this series made him look like. I know we get a small glimpse of his original design in one of the episodes, but come on...not a good design change even if it was for only this season.
Last note, Roberto De Niro....Why? He offered nothing to this series except Maryl getting his weapon at the end. What a waste of effort trying to incorporate him into this. Very forced.
I literally had to watch the old anime and pull out panels of the manga to make sure I wasn't mistaken on perspective of this new series.
And I want to iterate I have nothing against the CGI animation or Studio Orange, but I do have an issue with how badly this story was written.
