I didn't know about Btooom! until a friend recommended it to me and I found out that the anime adaptation was overshadowed by SAO's popularity a whole season before in 2012. I picked up the manga after watching the anime adaption and this manga is something on an entirely different level. The story, characters, and escalation with each chapter make this manga one of my favorites.
Despite the wide pool of anime that has the main character trapped in a video game, BTOOOM! separates itself from the other generic titles by really progressing through many hardships. The events happen simultaneously and there aren't any time skips
...
that make you go, "What happened for two years and how did they reach the 100th floor so fast?"
The artwork isn't for everyone. It's seinen so expect some nudity and graphic images. The overall art is crude but effective in displaying the right emotions. The character designs could use some extra effort apart from the main characters, but it's a bit hard to do if you're going to have a battle royale of at least 30 people.
The biggest selling point, in my opinion, has to be the characters. You wouldn't expect all of these new characters that seem like disposable characters to have such a drive or story that had them sent to the island. It's really painful for me to read such a brief but powerful backstory for a character you probably wouldn't care about unless they were the main focus be a character that you probably know isn't going to survive. The character department in this manga really pulls some strings and they are some characters that will be tossed aside, but I can see that the author didn't just make a battle royale with only the main character just fighting pointless battles against enemies who you wouldn't care about anyway.
My only downside is how slow the chapters are being released, but every time I I get to read two or three chapters in succession, I can't seem to drop my focus from the content. The pacing and the execution really get your adrenaline up and it's just so hard to put down and even harder to wait for the next chapter to be released.
My final verdict would be at least an 8 for every category and I'm hoping for a second season of the anime. If you haven't watched the anime, I'd recommend you do as it's really underappreciated.
