That part near the end where Shinji says, "Kaworu, what the fuck are you talking about?"
That was me. This entire fucking movie.
The first action sequence sucked because I was too busy trying to figure out what the hell was going on to give a shit. The action sequence at the end sucked because everything contorts and transforms so much that half the time I have no idea what the fuck I'm looking at. All the shots just look like this: https://i.redd.it/80mcpfvbc1u21.jpg The action sequences make sense from a plot standpoint, but I have no idea why they're so flashy and over-produced. For me, Evangelion has
...
always been about the characters and their relationships to one another. The fight scenes in the original series and the prior two movies (mostly) exemplify this, with each battle serving as a device to convey the emotions and desires of the characters. The fight scenes in this are empty and soulless.
Mari adds literally nothing to these films. It makes sense that another Child needed to be introduced to pilot 08, but they could have at least made her likable. She has no established relationships with any of the characters, and we still don't even know where the fuck she came from. She has no character traits other than piloting Eva for fun, spouting dumbass nonsense for no reason, ruining suspenseful scenes, and...Smelling?????
I didn't think it was possible to make the original Evangelion even more confusing. The end of 2.0 was such a mindfuck...and still is, because the non-explanation Kaworu gives Shinji HALFWAY through this movie only covers half of it. Why did it take 14 years for Shinji to wake up? What the fuck did Mk. 6 do? How did everyone survive? I can't even understand half the shit they DO reveal because of all the damn terminology. I had this complaint in the original series, but they at least explain some of what you need to understand dialogue.
There were some good things about this movie. The scenes with Rei and Shinji were tragic and compelling. The plot with Kaworu was pretty good. The scenes with he and Shinji playing piano and enjoying each other's company were nice. They provide setup for Shinji's complete dependence and faith in Kaworu and his plan, to the point where he even goes against Kaworu's own wishes in the end. The scene with Fuyutsuki and Shinji playing shogi was great, the lights coming on suddenly ties in well with the sudden nature of the N2 exposition mine he drops on Shinji's ass. The ending gives me hope that the final film will focus on the interactions between the three main children again, and less on the nauseating action sequences.
This was all just my gut reaction to this movie, so forgive me if I exaggerated or forgot to explain something I said. I thought 2.0 was fantastic, so watching this directly after came as a shock to me. I'm still glad to have watched this, though. Had I stopped at 2.0, I would've had to go to bed depressed. After watching 3.0, I'm just going to go to bed confused.
