The psychodelic style of filmmaking is present both in SEL and in SB. The themes aren't that closely related but we can still trace similarities in their stories when both of them could be seen as a journey to find your place in the world. Although I find SEL superior, SB isn't that far behind which is truly amazing for a psychological anime in 2021.

Character-driven animes with heavy world-building. Sadly, I can't elaborate more because of spoilers.

Sonny Boy is clearly inspired by Satoshi's Magnum Opus, Perfect Blue. The direction in SB closely resembles the style of PB in style and in content. PB and SB are works about finding and truly accepting yourself both with heavy psychological aspects. I found this anime series to be something that tried to be some kind of tribute to the memory of Satoshi, but in the end, it still could find its own identity. Nonetheless, it's really interesting to find that the original character design of PB and SB are done by the same person which explains why the artistic identity of both works are so close to each other.

Both of them have strong dementia aspects and a strange history that dont make much sense at first glance.

I'm suprised to see that no one recomended Gintama as a similar anime. Gintama and Maoujou share a similar type of nosense humor that makes me cry from laughing almost every episode. As far as i remember these two and nichijou were the only ones that had me laugh so loud.
