All I can say is that this anime was reminiscent of Higurashi: When they cry series. Except, albeit with a different plotline, it was better. I thought the series would end at episode 12 or 13 (I binged the whole 25 eps btw). When it reached that point, I wondered what else they would do for another 12 more episodes. It didn't fail to surprise me that the plot just gets deeper and deeper.

The way they handled the mystery and gave out bits of information just enough to keep me hooked. I appreciate that they embraced the plot's supernaturalism and did not keep ... it mysterious as to how and where those "powers" came from. Although by the latter half of the 2nd cour it focused more on these "powers", it was not much complicated, and in a way straightforward with the plot.

Art was above average. They did not half-ass it that I was able to focus on the story without getting distracted by any "bad" art. In fact, they did exceptionally well on parts where it was needed.

The music was okay. Really is nothing much to comment about. In my binge, I recommend not watching this in the dead of night, especially the 1st cour, it really brings out the creepy and suspense vibes. I liked the 1st opening and ending.

The plot was original on the part of the "shadows", but the first time the main character used his "power", I thought it was going to be another Re:zero phenomena. And yes it is, but they gave enough orignality and limits on the powers, and basically, that's what made it set itself from the other animes with the same theme (e.g. Stein's Gate). I can't deny that the story was only focused on the main characters, the island, and how to beat the enemy while discussing the mechanics of it. I could say it lacked a bit more world-building and objectiveness. This isn't bad though, I understand they wanted to focus on how Shinpei, the main character, deals with the challenges going forwards (or backward iykwim).

The character were straightforward. I think if we took out the plot, the characters would just be average or below. They reacted to things the way they were designed to be so I couldn't relate much in terms of their flatness. Even I think Hizuru, a sub character, was more interesting.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series and would give it an 8.5. This is something that would take you in for an unexpected ride if you haven't watched that much anime yet with this kind of theme. And even if you did, it really gives a different impact. It's worth watching and one of the good crops produced in 2022 Summer Anime season.

I'm writing this review fresh off of binge-ing all ten episodes on Netflix. Very minor spoilers included.

The premise of the show started off really really well. Before i stated watching, I though this was going to be a revolutionary series in ways... but i guess i expected to much. Episode 1 really set the mood and believe me, as someone who has experienced the terror of earthquakes, it gave me goosebumps. When I thought everything would continue for the building up on the such great groundwork of the intro, it all went slowly downhill from there.

Story: 7
I was on the edge of my seat ... after the first episode ended but while the story progressed, the excitement and tension wore off. The events was starting to feel more like of a generic catastrophic-themed movies (like 2012, San Andreas, The Day After Tomorrow(pardon for using non-anime references, these really are what popped into mind while watching)). After the tension from the premise's events, it became more of adventure genre anime. This especially in the middle arc (Shin City). Even if you take out the episodes in the middle (from the only 10 episodes), the story wouldn't have changed much. The story slowly picked itself up towards the ending with all the events leading up to the resurrection of Japan. I was more or less satisfied with the way they ended things.

Art: 7
The first few moments, you'll get your eyes glued to the opening for its artstyle. There weren't much 'wow' moments for me considering the unconventional-ish way of animation (similar to tatami galaxy) and sometimes the artstyle is just plain annoying.

Sound: 8
Now the sound really set the mood for me. There weren't notable soundtracks being played but the moments when they play the sounds puts the thrilling vibe in the right place.

Character: 6
Japan Sinks 2020 is quite full of characters that they had to keep killing them off. With the constant pace the main characters travel in the series, they get to meet a couple of characters but don't give enough impact. The character development of the main characters (Ayumu and Go specifically), could have been done better. From the beginning to the end, Ayumu's perspective of things didn't really change much and the impact of the characters were less rather than the overall story. When 2 of the main characters died (especially the dad), there was so little impact on his leaving even considering that he would have been one of the more prominent characters that could make the story better than it is.

Overall: 7
I was just really let down after the tension and excitement of the the first episode but was still satisfied by the way it ended. The middle arc could have changed, or the direction of the story should have really changed in the middle where with or without the Shin City story, nothing much would have changed.

I really recommend this show for those who don't mind graphic and gore clips. It's quite a breather from your usual anime.
