In short, they did the best they could with the uniquely odd situation they were in.
If you're a fan of 0079 I'd recommend giving this a watch.
Felt like a classic anime spin-off movie but with a higher tier of production quality than your typical Shonen movie.
If you watched the show already you know what's going to happen in the next episode.
That does suck some of the tension out of it. However, they do a good job of making you care for the movie-only characters.

There's a certain scene towards the end of the movie which completely brakes the logic of the show. I can not watch the anime anymore without thinking about why they do not just do that all the time. It was quick, efficient & practical, not to mention pirate-like. Besides that, it is the same recycled plot they have been cycling through for 20 years at this point. Nami gets kidnaped & the crew needs to save her along with an island of quirky never to be seen-again characters. The animation is great & they wear stellar costumes. So if that's all you need this
