Real story is yet to begin...
A lot of preliminary reviews complains about character development. Well this whole cour has been nothing but about character development only. Nothing really happened in these 12 episodes other than character development.
If one is planning to watch a story in these 12 episodes here, then read this small gist & decide accordingly.
"This is no Season 1. This is just Part 1 of a longer season marketed as first Season, avoid it unless you are willing to wait for real story & enjoy a long slow filler.".
Now coming back to main part.
I don't get it why the art & animation of
...
the show is so outdated. This show has produced shows with great art work but this definitely not the one. It feels so mid-2010s.
Dialogues & sound effects could be done way better. A lot of cost cutting can be felt in this. Until something is extremely necessary, its skipped even though those things play a very important part of story-telling.
Its a average slow-paced direction towards character development with not really a story yet. Story has barely moved in last 5-6 episodes, hell in last 10-11 episodes. Character development has been thorough but only in prospective sense.
History of every character is conveniently skipped/ignored even though there was enough time to cover that aspect without any significant change in pacing of storyline (as if anything really happened in these episodes).
This show has been filled with a lot of other minor things can be grimed about but lets just skip those afterall these don't take much of a screentime in grand scheme of things.
Let's conclude things. I personally would recommend this show if you have some patience & hope that this patience will suitable rewarded in the coming sequel(s). If you like nobility based shows with some serious undertones, then you can also consider this as an option. For isekai/fantasy haters & impatient ones, its better not to consider it at all.
P.S. For now I have rated this show as a 7/10 (a generous score) but I plan on revaluating the score at a later date after upcoming sequel (which I consider as Part 2 of the season) is completed.

Solo Leveling, proclaimed by fans as one of the greatest show of the season, is a one man show. Not that I mind it being that for this season, but I would love to see more main characters down the line.
Its story is pretty straightforward dark fantasy with gaming style leveling. Its been quite good so far.
Its art work is quite good & suitable for the theme. Animation is good as well. Most action scenes are executed well while only a few portions felt choppy.
Character Development is nothing really to write about. Its a one man show whose development is done quite well with
...
a few exceptions where it felt less geniune. Other characters are largely skipped as if they hardly matters even down the line.
Sound department has done its job quite well with no major issues affecting viewers enjoyment. OP & Ending themes are frankly personal preferences.
Direction of the show is done quite well with some rooms of improvements but its been done in a quite enjoyable manner.
I enjoyed this show quite a lot & waiting for it for a week was a struggle.
This show is highly recommended.

Earlier I was planning on skipping my usual 5 Departments of Review this time, but MAL system has another plans for me. There are not allowing me post the short simple review. So, here we go:
Its a great show that excels in every department be it Story, Art & animation, Character development, Direction & enjoyment and Sound (my 5 Departments).
Everything blends just perfectly, kudos to the team and their choices.
The only real issue is its over simplicity. Its a generic straightforward romance drama story where nothing really exciting happens unlike some other shows on same/similar theme.
This blandness in storyline isn't something really to fuss about.
...
Infact it can also be coined as a surprising factor for the show considering every other show on this theme has some kind of somewhat predictable downs.
So, it can be coined as masterpiece in the aspect for being on a different path which most storyline skips in the hope of being different/exciting.
All that being said, its a recommended show from me with an on record score of 10 (& in heart score of somewhere between 9 & 9.5).

Before discussing about each aspect of the movie, I'm gonna reiterate this - "This movie doesn't really belong & feels like a movie of 2021-22. Its a through & through late 80s or 90s movie in every way".
Now coming to the discussion about this movie, its gonna be broken into 5 broad aspects: Art & Animation, Sound, Character Development, Direction & Story;& Enjoyment.
Let's talk about art & animation. It doesn't really belong to a movie in 2021 or 2022. For a movie, its a through & through late 80s & 90s style. It has similar art style found in Ghibli movies of those times &
...
even this studio's anime TV series of 2000s.
Moribito from same author has exactly same vibes in this department & others as well. Animation is smoother here than from those days. Guess something is improved afterall its 2020s.
In sound department, the studio has done a great job. Guess something really great comes with going the late 80s & 90s route. Unlike most movies & animes of 2020s, it doesn't ignore the background effects. One can even hear the sound of wind blowing, leaves & branches in scenes. In English Dub, VAs have done a very good job as well.
Character Development is good for a movie. The movie developes the relationship of characters quite well. It does a decently good job in creating a connection between viewers & main characters as well, though it could be a bit better.
The direction of the movie is just fine. Had it been a bit better, then impact of the movie would've been great. The pacing of the movie could've been a bit better. Infact the shortfall mentioned in the above para is a direct result of the direction issue. Story, otherwise, is quite good.
Apart from the few shortfalls that I noticed, the movie has been quite enjoyable for me. I would recommend giving it a shot.
For those, who loved animes like Moribito, Princess Mononoke, etc must watch this movie.

Lets be frank. The only redeeming quality of this show is its strong story.
Other things are either just average or sucks, be it direction or character development.
The most horrendous thing about this anime is its art & animation. It just sucks. What the hell the studio was thinking with such a crappy background art, character art & worse of all CGI.
Even the animation wasn't smooth & feel off some time which is bad considering when its released. Had this animation in an anime launched in early 2000s or even 2010s, then it would make bearable but not now.
The character development is just average & direction
...
is not great as well.
The sound department is inconsistent. Sometimes its good but other times it just lacks impact.
If not for the story itself, the show would proved to be a junk.

Are you someone who has played the game & aware of storyline, then don't bother reading my review of this anime. You are better off reading a review of someone who know about the game.
My review is strictly for an anime only viewer. I have no clue about the contents of game. I have watched Englist dub, so that's also something that should be considered.
All that being said, I am somewhat impressed by the show. Among many game based shows, this is one of the better ones with better pace, better story, better plotline & better art.
Sure not everything is positive about this show. If
...
it would, I had given it a 10.
Well lets start with the field in which the show did best - art & animation. Art is quite good, very consistent in quality with good animation quality.
The storyline is quite good as well & somewhat complete (sure climax has some issues but as I again iterate its better one among game based shows).
The pacing of the story is quite good for the most part. Here as well, they end up messing the pacing in last 2 episodes (especially the last one, which was a mess). The direction, otherwise, was quite good with no major issues elsewhere.
The character development was quite good in comparison to other game based animes or original animes but when compared to animes with a good source, its average. The development of inter-personal relationship between characters was somewhat lacking especially among major characters. As for character introduction to viewers, it was average.
The sound department has done an above average job. They at times failed to capture the true depth of the event. This in my opinion is the weakest link of the show.
I personally believe the overall score of the show doesn't deserve to be this low, its way better than the source game fans are making the show to be.

Let me be summarise my review with this one line:
"A lot of potential was lost, passable performances plagued this movie"
In no department, the movie performs exceptionally. All departments work like they do in an average TV series, doing a passable job nothing exceptional that should be the case for movies in my humble opinion.
The story & direction of the movie is pretty straightforward. Nobody pulls any punches to present movie in a slight different way.
Art & Animations were good but nowhere near the level of 2022 standards (especially for a movie).
Sound department did a good job & even the VAs did a passable job for
...
English dub. Surely they could've done better but frankly every department could've done better in the production of the movie.
Character development, again, was a passable job but barely. They established every relation but depth of relationships weren't established properly. As a viewer, I was not even able to establish any connection with the characters.
Doing the just passable job didn't provide viewers with a great movie experience.
I would again repeat this: "Passable Performances plagued this movie".

The show has 2 clear halves, each with its separate character. Its like 2 different shows were made about the same story. Each half of those shows are then Frankenstein together to made this show.
First half is crazy Echchi Comedy show, infact towards the end of first half it goes as far as absurd. This half is also the worst part of this show. It has absurd pacing, absurd story, some wierd comedy scenes & absurd direction.
Second half is the sci-fi romance drama show. It is just the opposite of first half with great pacing, a story that makes sense with a cover-up of mess
...
of first half, good direction & romance emotional stuff. This is the best part of show. Surely its not as invincible as I had mentioned about it but its still great.
Now that I have covered the story & direction aspect of the show above, I'll cover remaining three points here : Art & Animation, Sound & Character.
Art & animation is quite good. It clearly gives off a Echchhi Sci-Fi Anime vibe. There are no major issues observed by me in animation department.
Sound department has done a fiarly good job too. Backgroud effects, music & dialogues are done well in English Dub.
Character Designs are good & their development is quite good. We were quite aptly introduced with the characters over the whole series to create a connection with them. I have no qualms in this department.
All that being said, I have no mixed feelings about this show in recommending it to fellow MAL users. In any case, one will definitely like atleast one half of the show.

I wasn't planning om writing a review about this show in the first place, but then I decided to write one to help fellow users to make their decision whether or not they should watch it.
This show is a mess with 2 halves completely opposite to each other. Its like they are directed by two separate teams or director decided to switch the way show is going to be during the airing phase.
If you love chaos, nonsense in an anime or even just tired of an order in anime storyline, then you might like first half of the store. If you hate chaos, then second
...
half will feel better to you.
I don't know how people have rated this show so high or how it got nominated for various award events, but in my opinion it just doesn't deserve this.
The story overall is a mess with no proper character introduction, minimal character background & a wierd kinda lawless world.
By Episode 4, I was frustrated with the show & planning to drop it. By Episode 6, I was so confused as to whether or not should I continue this show. It was becoming sort of unbearable to me. Don't know what went into my mind that I decided to watch Ep 7. This is whether I suspect that story is starting to get a direction, which later episodes proved to be true (atleast in some way). Climax was junk & again a mess like first 6 episodes.
The art work & animation is an inconsistent mess, replica of old school animes with some modern twists. This is something not expected in this day and age.
The sound department in English Dub was sub-par with lot of noticeable issues. This was much more noticeable as other departments weren't good enough to cover the shortfalls of this department. One may even say that one might even start to notice these issues in great detail because other departments are making you to notice all the issues with the anime.
Now for my score for this show. If not for the somewhat order in the second half about the storyline in general, this show would have got a 3 or 4 from me. This is coming from me whose mean score is around 8 as I am very liberal in scoring & ignoring issues (unless I am about to score an anime between a 9 or a 10).

A good anime with nothing really new, except for the fact that it wouldn't hook you from get go. You have to be patient, the show will then start to grow on you.
Art & animation are the weaker links of the show. Even with the opted art style, the quality feels quite inconsistent.
Character development is somewhat good, not the best. I feel the direction isn't great but feels somewhat intentional to let the show grow on you.
Sound department is good. I watched the English Dub & felt it to be quite good. Sound effects weren't much dull down which usually happen in modern English dubs.
Story
...
in itself is plain & simple, which isn't bad in my books. I like them that way only.
If you are patient with the show, then you'll like it. Give it a chance to watch 3-4 episodes, then you'll most probably binge watch it. Else, you're more likely to drop the show. I was ready to leave the show after Ep 1 & again after Ep2, but here I'm giving it a 7 Good Score.
