These two anime have a similar calming atmosphere, detailed backgrounds, and an emphasis on friendship. Manaria is shorter and thus more limited in scope while Aria is much longer (and has sequels). Each is well worth the watch, however, for anyone looking for a soothing and quietly enjoyable series.

Hanasaku Iroha

Both series are well written works which immerse you in their respective universes. Likewise, both make you care about the characters. I found myself cheering the cast of Aria on more than once, a feeling very few series are capable of producing. I cannot recommend Aria enough if you've just seen Hanasaku Iroha. It is really the perfect follow up series. (It's not to bad by itself either ^.^)
