I admit right now that I came into this anime expecting something quite different than what it was. The summary seemed like it would make for great tragedy at the end, and while it did, I still felt like it was sorely lacking. The whole ending of the show seemed like it downplayed the relationship built between the two main characters, something that felt like a cop-out to me since the relationship really did grow in a very believable way.
Story: 8
From an unbiased perspective, this story really was more than decent. There were a lot of things going for it, disregarding my feelings on the
...
ending. I thought that they accomplished something difficult, balancing tension, impending doom, and tragedy with some levity and a love dynamic. That is something I feel a lot of shows try to do and fail at. For the length of the show, it did a good job with plot.
Art: 8
At first glance, you might think this anime is older than it is. However, despite the relative antiquity of the art, it managed to be very beautiful in it's own way. I thought that the battleships looked very alien in a good way and all of the scenery was well done too. The art fit the tone of the anime quite well.
Sound: 6
The reason I give this a six is because generally nothing stood out to me. The soundtrack was so much white noise, dramatic at the right parts, nonexistent in others. The ED was a little too upbeat for the feel of the anime, I think, but it wasn't glaringly bad. The OP, however, was really wonderful and suited the anime perfectly. As for the voice acting, I wasn't impressed, but I wasn't disgusted either. Every character had her moment, I guess, but there was once again nothing that stood out more than being just okay.
Character: 7
This is, again, one of those things that was really quite good until the ending. While character designs were very run of the mill, I thought that the character development far exceeded the design. The growth of relationships was believable, especially between Mari and Hagino. Most of the motivations also got eventually explained which is more than most anime can boast, and unlike most shojou-ai, not everyone was motivated by love of the cute little moe girl (thankfully there was none). However, as I stated before, the yuri relationship between Hagino and Mari came- in my opinion- to practically no end. Thus, the seven.
Overall:
I would have enjoyed this anime a lot more had it actually acted like the shojou-ai it claimed to be. I left it feeling unsatisfied and cheated which I don't like in my anime. I prefer to leave an anime feeling sad and depressed and wanting to write fanfiction. However, if you are not looking to watch something specifically shojou-ai, this is probably the thing for you, as the rest of the story is interesting and preludes the manga well.

Kyoshiro was surprisingly good if you are judging based just on the first episode. Yes, it is a mash-up of almost every genre known to man, as well as being a gigantic crossover with all of Kaishaku's other works, yet it's somehow very watchable. Honestly, I only came to this anime because of Kannazuki no Miko, but I discovered at the end that it was something I really liked. I would even go as far as to call myself a fan (not fangirl, just fan).
Story: 6
Like Kannazuki, Kyoshiro was a somewhat messy plot. It followed much of the same pattern as KnM too. A totally
...
discombobulated first episode, a midseries twist, and a heartbreaking, touching ending. Plot is not this anime's strong point, but it didn't fail completely only because of the ending which totally suckered me.
Art: 8
I am one of the few who actually likes bright and colorful art. I'm not sure why, but it just seemed to really go well with the series. Maybe because it's a fluffy/guilty pleasure anime but it worked for me. (All except for the fact that a certain evil somebody's powers are tinted rainbow).
Sound: 7
The sound was good enough. The soundtrack fit well, I listen to a few of the songs, like the song that plays while Kuu writes to her prince as the episode opener. Most of the music is just music that fits to the anime and isn't really enjoyable to hear otherwise. I watched the dubbed version by Funimation, and frankly I didn't mind the actors. I thought Kuu's voice actress played the "angsty teenager" role very well and I really liked Setsuna's voice. I just wish they could have gotten Michelle Ruff for Kaon after her fantastic portrayal of Chikane in KnM.
Character: 10
I think this is what made the anime compelling at all. Without it's interesting, deep and lovable characters, it would have had nothing. Kuu is not my favorite but she's bearable. At the end she really gets a lot of character and her final performance just broke my heart. Setsuna was lovely too, with interesting motivations and a strong will. Kyoshiro was a hero who wasn't perfect which is extremely refreshing (especially when compared with Souma Oogami). This anime also had a really strong cast of supporting roles, like my favorites, Kaon and Himiko, Soujirou and Tarlotte and the strangely moving Mika. I was definitely impressed with this set of characters.
Enjoyment:10
Yes, I really did enjoy this anime this much. For me, enjoyment of romance animes depends on how much I cry because of it. With Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora, I cried for nearly an hour, indicating that I really enjoyed it. It will never take the place of KnM for me but it definitely makes it to my top three.
Objectively, this is a relatively sloppy anime with potentially annoying characters, no overlying theme, tons of clichés and outrageous amounts of fanservice. But from a sad sap's point of view, it's a terrifically romantic show that has mechs, magic and angels mixed in for a little spice.

This anime is hard for me. I find it very similar to Kannazuki no Miko, which automatically biases me but I'll try my hardest to write an non-judgemental review.
Story:5
Ok, I was kind of on the fence about the story. For a large portion of the anime I was thinking in my head "WTH?" I was also trying to desperately sort out who I should remember, who's names I should learn and what everyone's motivations were. Then I got to the final few episodes at which point I was actually starting to get it, and they really melted my heart. So, the beginning is kind
...
of meh, but the ending was really pretty good (and you finally started to get it) so I gave the mediocre score.
Art:6
This isn't my favorite art style. It's kind of washed out looking, and its too echhi for my tastes. I prefer anime with harder lines (its easier for me to draw afterwards haha). After a while you get used to the enormous heads and actually start to appreciate the characters' looks. The animation was alright I suppose. Some of the fight things with the whole spinning skirt shot just made me laugh but the actual fighting part was pretty okay. Obviously that comes from the fact that the anime is based off of a game. All and all, the art is nice, just not my favorite.
Sound: 7
What bugs me is when people review sound when they haven't even taken time to listen to it outside of the anime. You can't really appreciate bits and pieces of it hacked together into certain scenes. I try to take the time to listen to the music from animes. I liked this anime's OST. It had some really nice orchestral and choral pieces and they're nice to listen to even on their own. I have a few personal favorites (mostly the ones that went with the dramatic romance-y scenes) but most of them are pretty nice and there's a good mix of tones and feelings. A well rounded soundtrack.
Character: 7
Not the best characters ever but pretty good. The three main characters were nicely designed and they actually had apparent motives (although Eve/Hatsumi's were a little questionable). I found that I enjoyed the side characters which surprised me. I usually don't. (Ken-chan was super annoying and perverted, just sayin) Garuganchua, Ritsuko, and all of the other people from the other book worlds were pretty interesting, and really not too stereotypical. My personal favorite side characters were Youko and Meirin.
Enjoyment: 8
Yes, I did enjoy this anime after I got past the whole confusing part. Re-watching it several times has also been helpful, since now I actually understand the parts I didn't get the first time. It was a sweet story, although a little unsatisfying at the ending. It didn't even have a little easter egg type thing like KnM did. (Oops, I'm supposed to be unbiased by KnM) This was a nice anime to watch, not my favorite, but I would watch it again on top of the few times I've re-watched it.
Overall: 6.6
This anime was almost good. It could have been had it been slightly longer and slightly more satisfying. Definitely a guilty pleasure that I'm planning on indulging in again.

***SPOILER ALERT!***
This anime really hit home with me. The love is so beautiful. I watched this because it was in related videos with Strawberry Panic and I think I liked this better. The first episode was extremely confusing the first time I watched it, and many people would be tempted to drop it, however you have to keep plugging through if only to reach the final episode. Now I laugh at the first episode because many parts are just so STUPID.
Story:8
The story was interesting to say the least. Once you got past the whole, "demon-worshippers battling in giant mechs" thing it was a very intriguing
...
plot. I thought it combined the schoolgirl theme with the Shinto priestess pretty well. However, there were definitely some holes and it seemed that in the second half of the anime the story decided to go a different direction. Less "slice of life mixed with random robot battles" and more "awesome battles mixed with internal turmoil mixed with plot twists" As you can see I liked the second half of the anime much better. So the story was pretty good, but not the reason why you watch the anime.
Art:9
People have complained about the art not being up to quota but I beg to differ. I thought most of the art was beautiful! The panning shots of the village, the gorgeous rose garden, the huge and elegant Himemiya mansion... it was all so well done. I found the vibrant colors to be a positive attribute. Again though, I still didn't like the mechs or the practically neon colored attack that Souma used at the end of almost half the episodes. Those overly flashy displays detracted from the otherwise lovely scenery. The characters were drawn very nicely, my only complaint is that the necks looked a little bit giraffe-y at times. The animators obviously put a lot of effort into creating such a great-looking anime.
Sound:9
The OST for Kannazuki no Miko is stunning for the most part. It's filled with the sad, elegant strains of Chikane no Theme throughout many songs and each song's name and place in the anime is fitting. There were only a few songs that I wasn't very fond of, but they were palatable, and part of it was just personal preference. The music was all well composed. The OP and ED were Re-Sublimity and Agony by KOTOKO. These songs had an electric feel to them yet they somehow fit in even with the classical score. I preferred Re-Sublimity, but Agony was also good and I think it was very appropriate to have that as the ED.
Character:7
Now, here's where I really get going. There are three main characters in Kannazuki no Miko, and COINCIDENTALLY they're in a love triangle, with the two most popular students in school competing over a shy little nobody.
First off, Oogami Souma.
Ugh.
I absolutely hate Souma. He's an annoying idiot who has nothing to say except for "I will protect you!" He's like the knight who looks good in armor (or on a motorcycle in his case) but when you look inside the helmet, he's a shallow dweeb with no redeeming quality except for his incessant urge to protect. If he had not been a rival to Chikane in the love triangle dynamic then he would have had absolutely no purpose in the anime. As it is, he's mostly just there as eye candy and as a false hope for all the non-yuri fans. That's all there is to say about his character. He deserves a 1.
And now on to Kurusugawa Himeko. I don't hate Himeko as passionately as I hate Souma however, I dislike her. At the beginning of the story she is almost unbearable. She's silly, shallow, has no-self esteem and yet generates no pity. Her dub voice grates on my ears and I don't love the smile that everyone is clamoring to protect. She cries waaaay too much and is completely dependent on Chikane and Souma. There's only one thing saves Himeko from being as awful as Souma... Chikane.
Himemiya Chikane is the saving grace of Kannazuki no Miko. She is such an amazing, beautiful character. Not only aesthetically but motivationally too. Her intentions are enigmatic all the way until the end. She is the one character who is not two dimensional. She is self-sacrificing, smart, supportive and so many other things. And that is the only reason why I tolerate Himeko, is because Chikane loves her. Towards the end when Himeko finally realizes her feelings for Chikane, that's when Himeko shines. But Chikane shines the whole time. Her voice actress is so perfect. That is exactly how Chikane should sound and Michelle Ruff portrays different sides of Chikane too. Himeko's best friend, the lunar priestess, Miya-sama, an evil Orochi, and finally, a sixteen year old girl who's found the love of her life. Nothing in this anime moved me even close to tears except for Chikane's heartache at having to make Himeko hate her and Chikane's tears when she's so cruelly parted from Himeko. Chikane is the only good main character in my opinion.
Then there are the other six necks of the Orochi. At first, they just served as comic relief and as enemies for Souma to effortlessly bowl through. Personally I actually kind of liked Sister Miyako and Reiko but the other three just annoyed me slightly. And then there was Tsubasa. Souma's tragic, sociopathic, long-lost brother. He's the definition of epic. And throughout the better part of the series he was the only side character with any depth. He had more depth than Souma which is really quite sad. Then within the last two episodes, the other Orochi were given a whole other layer, but they were already out of the picture. So aggravating.
There were more side characters that I can sum up easily: Yukihito: eye candy, Otoha: wannabe rival and sparkling eyed Chikane admirer, Kazuki: classic mentor who knows all the legends and wears a robe, Saotome Makoto: cute cheerful sporty girl who is an unexpected ally, and finally Izumi: school bully and another sparkling eyed Chikane admirer.
Enjoyment:10
There's no doubt, I LOVED watching this. It. Was. Epic. That's really all that needs to be said.
Overall:8.5
This was a really great anime. The OST, art and story were all really good. Unfortunately characters like Souma, Himeko, Girochi (creepy pedophile), Corona (resident stuck up priss) and Nekoko (sadistic cutsie catgirl) dragged th score down. If not for them Kannazuki no Miko would be a 9.5 for me. Thank goodness Chikane saved the day by actually having a point. In summation, if you are a fan of yuri, mecha, Shinto legends, drama, gorgeous anime or just a beautiful love story then this anime has something for you.
