Oof. I read some reviews and I mostly agree with the fact that this episode was a mess, the 25-minute recap was a huge fuck you, they obviously didn't plan their story and manage their time and were underprepared. Nothing really happened, we got no answers and instead were left with more questions. I wanted to write a review to add a few more points that annoyed the hell out of me and left me extremely disappointed. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
So this show that told a story about fighting to save tormented teenage girls that committed suicide, had so much potential. Suicides don't get talked about enough
...
anywhere and I was really impressed that a Japanese studio wanted to bring so important issues into light. Bullying, turning a blind eye, victim blaming, abuse, rape, LGBTQ kids suffering because society rejects them. In the end not only did they imply that girls (specifically girls, not boys, who are ambitious) kill themselves on a whim, for no serious reason but because they get emotional easily and an AI with murderous tendencies may or may not give them the final push. What bullshit. So much lost potential.
What is more, Koito's death, that was one of the biggest mysteries of the show, was given a voice-over-style explanation that lasted 10 seconds. Suddenly she is responsible for a teacher's suicide who got involved with a 14-year-old student, and they made it sound like it's her fault. Then she decided to torment Sasaki-sensei, that seriously sounds and acts like a creep, and threatened him that she'd jump off the roof if he didn't pay attention to her? With an audience of other students she shouted that he raped and abused and then "accidentally" slipped and fell to her death when no one was looking? LOL.
A lot of pointless and senseless things happen, for example: When used-to-be-dead and now-alive-girls come back to the real world, they get a random memory reset that makes them forget the one who fought for them. Momoe and Rika who were supposed to be traumatised are suddenly ok and they all go to Karaoke together, while Neiru goes missing without any explanation. Kotobuki appears alive from another dimension for no other reason than to tell the girls that Neiru, who by the way kept getting hurt and hospitalised and suffering from chronic pain where her sister had stabbed her, is a machine/AI that she created as an artificial clone of Neiru's "siter"! Then Rika is angsty again because she doesn't want to die for a machine but 5 seconds later she wants to die to see Mannen and Chiemi. Then she and Momoe get dropped completely. When Neiru finally calls Ai back, Ai throws her phone away and later cries. In the end Ai abandons her other friends too, changes schools *a random time skip happens* and concludes that Neiru is in the dream world so she goes to buy eggs in order to meet her.
Acca and Ura-Acca just exist there, Frill appears for 1 second and asks Neiru to be friends because they both want to become human, and we learn nothing more about her or why suicides happen or her connection to them, I still don't get Eros and Thanatos or the existence of Dot, Hyphen and Kirara Rodrigez Matured XVIII Evening Star SS Plum and does Japan Plati even have a point? Literally nothing made sense. I feel like nothing happened and every scene was pointless and meaningless. Nothing got explained.
That being said, I really understand that it's not the animator's fault, it's all on CloverWorks. I feel sorry for the animators, getting so poorly treated and overworked!
