I have mixed feelings about "Frieren." While I enjoyed many aspects of the show, certain elements of the characters and specific plot points left me unconvinced.

The first trial is mortally dangerous, with some second and third-grade mages dying. This is baffling because it seems wasteful to allow competent mages, who are valuable resources, to perish simply because they aren't fit for a higher rank.

Withdrawal Option in Second Trial:
The second trial offers participants a way to withdraw if they are in life-threatening danger, which should have been a feature from the beginning. This inconsistency in handling the safety of the participants is puzzling.

Fairness of the Second Trial:
The claim that the second trial is fair because everyone must defeat their copy is flawed. The random pairing and the inclusion of an unbeatable teacher copy undermine the fairness of this trial, making the outcomes feel arbitrary and unjust.

In conclusion, this anime has its merits, particularly in its well-crafted magic system and enjoyable character interactions. However, the weak plot, shallow character development, and lack of real stakes prevent it from reaching its full potential. For a show that is heavily character-driven, these issues are particularly glaring. Nonetheless, fans of slice-of-life anime may still find enjoyment in the journey and the world it presents.
