I'll just say it. Vinland Saga is my favorite manga. It beats both Beserk and One Piece.
One piece has a more grand adventure, Beserk has similar themes but Vinland Saga looks to reality and asks what it takes for the world to change. From both it's look at history, violence, human nature, and even friendship, it holds nothing back. Makoto Yukimura definitely made something that came to him while raising his sons. He takes hatred and anger and instead of glorifying or criticizing, he only asks the audience to look at what results.
