One of the toughest things to achieve a studio in the anime industry is to incarnate true romance in their works. It is even harder to do so in a school anime, considering that school romance in Japan is not a common phenomenon. But studio feel. succeed this mission with “Tsuki ga Kirei”, an anime that made it stand out from other anime series of that category and deliver us a good package of pure middle school romance.
Plot: 8/10
Don’t expect anything crazy about this element of the anime, we are talking about a real looking story, but that must not keep you away from this
...
show because it is actually pretty good. Our main characters are two third years’ students in middle school, both of them seem to have an interest in each other but at first, they don’t express their feelings. That’s until they get each other’s LINE in order to be in contact about the school’s sports event which they both have chores to complete. During the event, the male MC, Kotarou, finds the lost plush potato of the female MC, Akane, and delivers it to her. That’s how they start building their relationship and also start texting each other more often. The events that come after that are way more interesting but I don’t want to spoil anything.
Characters: 8/10
Akane is a runner who really loves running but she’s a shy person. She’s really anxious when she’s surrounded by many people, that’s why she is using a little plush potato as a stress ball.
Kotarou is a guy who loves reading and writing as well, he wants to become an author.
Expect the MCs there are two friends Kotarou, two friends of Akane and her sister, also Kotarou and Akane’s parents as well, something that makes this series even more realistic as they play a huge part on the flow of the plot and they are not left on the margin.
Their friends play a huge role in their relationship because they pretty much helped it to start off.
Artwork & Animation: 7/10
Well, this is what this anime does right and wrong at the same time.
Character design is awesome; all of the characters are pretty cute even though their design isn’t so detailed. I think it fits well with the whole romantic atmosphere. A downside about this is that the characters are way too bright sometimes.
The backgrounds are okay. Cool coloring and all in all a really nice environment for the development of this story.
But as I said the studio did some mistakes as well. One of them is that they used bad CG for the background characters or for scenes when the characters of the story are mixed in a crowd. It just doesn’t fit in the whole series, it would be better if they didn’t use CG at all.
Music: 8/10
I am not a specialist on this topic so I will only speak about the opening and the ending songs.
The opening song is just amazing. The singer, Nao Touyama, is a really talented person; her performance on this song was so good. Also, there is no doubt that the composer of this song is a true professional.
As for the ending song, the singer is once again Nao Touyama, so I think that I don’t need to say anything more. Now the melody of this song is something different and it really does its job well, to relax you after a good episode.
Voice Acting: 7/10
Akane’s voice actress is Konomi Kohara a really talented seiyuu who hadn’t got a lot of jobs in the industry when she got Akane’s role. Today (March 2019) she has voiced Mina from Karakai Jouzo no Takagi-san, Koyomi from Yagate Kimi ni Naru, Miu from Domestic Girlfriend, Erena from Hanebado! and Fujiwara Chika from Kaguya-sama: Love is War. So yeah, her voice fits Akane’s character -a cute shy girl- very well.
On the other hand, Shoya Chiba’s voice isn’t that good for Kotarou, at least in my opinion, but generally, it’s okay.
For the other characters voices are just okay nothing special to mention.
Overall: 8/10
All in all, this series may seem like the typical school romance, but it isn’t actually that cliché. It is the kind of series that makes you say: “I would like so much to live a similar story in my life”. I think that this is the pure romance anime that you were searching for (if you were). Give it a try, it will not disappoint you.
