Solo Leveling by all means doesn't reinvent the wheel with the magical leveling-up edgy protagonist but it does bring a fresh spin on the old genre. The world itself is fairly interesting and unique, lacking many of the cliches often found in animes like this(possibly due reflecting korean culture). The anime's highpoints are the stellar animation and fight scenes as well as above average directing and steady pacing. Things generally progress in a "natural way" and the moments meant to be impactful are in fact, well impactful.
Now, the issues of the anime. The actual side characters are either non existent or completely undeveloped. It really

is "solo" leveling. The problem is they introduce side characters only to leave them bland and shallow. The Plot is actually genuinely non existent. 12 episodes and I can't tell you what the anime is about or where the story is actually heading. It's very freeform in the story department which would be GOOD if there were an adventure aspect to the story with a good protagonist. There is infact NO adventure aspect. All meaningful adventures by the lead affect him only and are isolated.
The main character himself goes through an Arifureta esque transformation. If you might find yourself a fan of the "former loser now edgy silent badass" scheme then have at it. As far as I'm concerned the protagonist is way to undeveloped in terms of emotional character. His progress is odd and brash. In a sense a worse written Ains(from overlord). Though to note, even the shotty writing and characterisation here, exceeds that of the average seasonly isekai.
All in all, a 7. A 7 is an excellent score and summarizes an above average enjoyable anime which I would recommend to people who like the genre. Despite the m a n y flaws, animation, intrigue and directing carry the anime strongly. These are honestly enough to make up for the bad writing and characterisation. In a sense comparable to demon slayer in that regard, subpar writing combined with excellent visuals and fights.
